<i>Classical</i> Savion postponed at Zoellner
Classical Savion, a one-man show with internationally acclaimed tap sensation Savion Glover, the award-winning choreographer of the Broadway hit Bring in ’Da Noise, Bring in ’Da Funk, has been postponed until 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 3 at Zoellner Arts Center.
Classical Savion had been booked to replace the Bring in ’Da Noise, Bring in ’Da Funk tour, which originally was scheduled to appear at Zoellner on Jan. 28. That performance was cancelled by its producers.
Current ticket holders interested in attending the new show date must call Zoellner Ticket Services by Feb. 8 for new tickets. Previously purchased tickets are invalid. Tickets are still available for the general public.
Glover’s show is straight from its premiere at New York City’s Joyce Theatre. The tap-dancing phenomenon, backed by classical musicians, displays the energy and virtuosity that define his genius, as he dances to music by the likes of Stravinsky and Bach.
The show has been praised by reviewers. “Mr. Glover performs virtually nonstop for two hours,” The New York Times reported. “Acting as a great unifier, Mr. Glover suggests that whatever the idiom it’s all music.”
Performer, choreographer and director Savion Glover is the 1996 Tony Award winner for his choreography in the Broadway smash hit Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk. He is the recipient of the 1996 Drama Desk Award, the Outer Critics Circle Award for choreography, two Obie Awards and two Fred Astaire Awards for his choreography and performance in Bring in ‘Da Noise, Bring in ‘Da Funk as well as the 1996 Dance Magazine Choreographer of the Year Award.
Glover made his Broadway debut at age 12, starring in The Tap Dance Kid. Additional Broadway credits include Black and Blue and Jelly’s Last Jam co-starring the late Gregory Hines. Glover made his film debut, at age 13, in Tap with Gregory Hines and Sammy Davis Jr. On TV, he was a series regular on Sesame Street for five seasons and was featured in Kenny G’s video Havanna and in Puff Daddy and the Family’s video for All About the Benjamins. Glover executive produced and choreographed the ABC special Savion Glover’s Nu York. He starred in the Showtime movie, The Wall, and choreographed the HBO movie, The Rat Pack.
In conjunction with the performance, Zoellner will present a free pre-performance lobby show by Lehigh University’s Finest Step Team at 7 pm.
