Our Story, Our Spirit
Lehigh's first official mascot, the “Mountain Hawk,” debuted in 1995 and was named “Clutch” in 2008. Before that, Lehigh’s teams were known as the “Engineers,” reflecting early ties to the railroad industry.
We’ve proudly worn the “Brown & White” since 1867. The precise reason for these color choices is unknown, but Lehigh folklore suggests a group of men being inspired by a pair of fashionable brown and white stockings.
Homo Minister et Interpres Naturae, which translates loosely to "Man, the servant and interpreter of nature," taken from the works of Francis Bacon, was the motto chosen to exemplify scientific and classical education.
During Spirit Week before the Lehigh-Lafayette game, students form teams, decorate beds and race them down Packer Avenue, historically showcasing their engineering prowess.
The Rally is a move-in tradition where the incoming class is adopted by the class introduced 50 years prior, who also celebrate them at commencement bell-ringing.
Since the 1970’s, Eco Flame has shaken up classrooms. The Marching 97 band weaves through campus, climbing desks and building anticipation for the Rivalry game while playing spirited fight songs.
The Lehigh-Lafayette rivalry is one of the most celebrated in all of college football. Located less than 20 miles apart, the schools began their rivalry in 1884 and have since played more times than any set of rivals in the nation.
The lyrics to Lehigh's Alma Mater were written by John J. Gibson, the editor-in-chief of the Lehigh Burr (the student magazine at the time) in 1894.
