Lehigh Joins Global Design Thinking Alliance to Help Advance Empathy-Based Innovation

The university is just the fourth U.S. institution to be accepted to this alliance.

In a world facing complex challenges, Design Thinking offers a powerful approach to problem-solving that recognizes the needs of the end-user in every solution. Lehigh, which is committed to advancing human-centered innovation, has been accepted into The Global Design Thinking Alliance (GDTA), a global network dedicated to this shared goal.

Lehigh is just the fourth U.S. institution to be accepted to this alliance, underscoring a deep commitment to fostering a culture of entrepreneurial innovation and creativity on both local and global scales. The GDTA connects Design Thinking practitioners from diverse disciplines across 23 countries on five continents. This expansive network facilitates collaboration between experienced innovators and aspiring problem-solvers. By bridging diverse perspectives, the GDTA empowers its members to develop novel, impactful approaches to addressing complex challenges.

“Training students in Design Thinking is perfectly aligned with our institution's commitment to preparing students for successful careers as ‘Future Makers,’” Nathan Urban, provost and senior vice president for academic affairs, said. “Graduates who can approach challenges from the perspective of the human end-user will be uniquely positioned to change their industries and communities in positive ways. A human-centered mindset will become an even more essential skill going forward as challenges become more complex and we seek to create a greater sense of agency and purpose in our students.”

Design Thinking is a framework that equips problem-solvers with the mindsets and methods to tackle complex challenges. This approach begins by deeply understanding user needs through research and observation, then uses ideation to generate creative solutions. By rapidly prototyping and testing ideas, design thinkers can refine their solutions to deliver maximum value and impact.

Lehigh is actively implementing these Design Thinking principles across campus, with various initiatives demonstrating its commitment to this approach. These initiatives include the Designing Your Life curriculum used by the Center for Career and Professional Development (CCPD) to foster career readiness, the Lehigh User Defined Inquiry (LUDI) initiative that focuses on innovation in education and the Design Thinking for Innovation course available to all students.

Lehigh's Baker Institute, which offers Design Thinking workshops and programs open to students, faculty, staff, and the broader community, is working to embed Design Thinking for Future Makers modules in courses across all disciplines. By infusing design thinking throughout the academic experience, Lehigh equips its students with the tools and mindset needed to tackle complex challenges in an innovative way.

“Solutions that address the actual needs and challenges faced by individuals and organizations have great value, no matter the setting, and Lehigh graduates will be leading the charge.” Lisa Getzler, vice provost for entrepreneurship at Lehigh University, said. “Joining the GDTA reinforces our dedication to human-centered design and fostering empathy-forward solutions in all our endeavors. This membership will provide valuable opportunities for our faculty, students, and researchers to connect with leading experts and institutions around the globe.”

Lehigh’s Office of Entrepreneurship will serve as the University’s member representative. “The GDTA’s collaborative framework is crucial for driving the global advancement of Design Thinking,” says Tyler Groft, director of Lehigh's Baker Institute, “Through this alliance, Lehigh can contribute its own expertise while also gaining valuable insights from other leading institutions.”
