Cathy Engelbert ’86 is the first commissioner of the WNBA, the nation’s top professional women’s basketball league. Named to the league’s premier position in May 2019, she is responsible for the league’s direction, day-to-day business and basketball operations.

Engelbert, a senior captain when she played on Lehigh’s basketball and lacrosse teams, is a certified public accountant licensed in three states. She joins the WNBA from Deloitte, where she rose through the ranks to become CEO—the first woman ever to lead a Big Four professional services firm in the United States.

At Deloitte, she moved the firm toward emerging technologies while revenues grew more than 30%. She also focused on employee well-being, implementing programs such as a 16-week family leave policy. For the past four years, she was listed as one of Fortune’s Most Powerful Women.

Engelbert earned an accounting degree from Lehigh, where she delivered the 2018 commencement address. She also delivered the 2019 Donald M. Gruhn ’49 Distinguished Finance lecture in October.
