Womens basketball goes 15-for-15

The Lehigh women’s basketball team went a perfect 15-for-15 last semester, as all 15 players on the Lehigh roster posted a grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the fall 2002 term. Coupled with wins in four of their last six games, the Mountain Hawks are grabbing headlines both on the court and in the classroom.
As a team, the Mountain Hawks posted a GPA of 3.39, higher than any other athletic team on the Lehigh campus. Nine Mountain Hawks qualified for the Patriot League Academic Honor Roll, and four made the Dean’s List at Lehigh.
The strong academic success our young women have experienced in the classroom is a reflection of the type of student-athletes we recruit at Lehigh, said head coach Sue Troyan. They have shown their ability to prioritize what is important, and it is a pleasure to work with true student-athletes.
Senior Anne Tierney is the team’s captain and leader on the floor. She leads the team in scoring and rebounding, and is also tops in the classroom. Tierney posted a perfect 4.0 GPA in the fall, and was one of four Mountain Hawks on the Dean’s List. Joining Tierney with a GPA of 3.5 or better are senior Cat Nicholson (3.86), freshman Dawn Gorynski (3.71), and senior Billi Ford (3.5). In addition to those four, Kelly Berk, Shelita Burks, Jenny Callan, Mary Frances Hynoski, and Chantal St. Laurent all qualified for the Patriot League’s Academic Honor Roll, which requires a GPA of 3.2 or higher.
Lehigh University, a founding member of the Patriot League, has been ranked in the top ten in the NCAA’s overall student-athlete graduation rates report for nearly a decade, or essentially since the NCAA has tracked such data. Lehigh won the inaugural USA Today/NCAA Foundation Academic Achievement Award in 2001 for boasting the nation’s highest graduate rate at 96%. Lehigh is also one of just 20 athletics programs ranked by U.S. News & World Report’s America’s Best College Sports Programs.
