Toliver, Johnson win Arthur Ashe Awards

Two women’s basketball players have been honored as recipients of the 2002 Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholar Award. Sophomores Carli Toliver and Teniece Johnson were recognized for their achievements in academics, athletics, and service to the community. The award is given to African-American student-athletes who best exemplify these high standards set by the late tennis star who passed away in 1993.

Toliver earned second team Arthur Ashe honors following her strong sophomore campaign. She posted a 3.73 grade point average during the fall 2001 semester, and holds a 3.59 cumulative GPA. On the court, Toliver finished second on the team in scoring, averaging 11.9 points per game. She led the Mountain Hawks in scoring against Patriot League opponents, pouring in over 14 points per league contest.

Johnson, a third team selection, possesses a 3.44 cumulative GPA as a student-athlete in the business school. A tenacious defender on the court, Johnson has demonstrated her leadership abilities, as her teammates selected her to serve as a captain in only her second season.

Both Toliver and Johnson are active on campus and within the community. Along with their teammates, they participate in events such as youth clinics, a 5K run to benefit breast cancer research, and the Lehigh C.O.A.C.H. (community outreach) program.
