Three Day Celebration to Celebrate the Inauguration of President Gast
President Gast will deliver an inaugural address, sharing her thoughts on Lehigh and its future. There will also be a procession of students, faculty, staff, alumni, and distinguished guests, as well as speeches by respected academic leaders. Events commemorating the inauguration will last three days, including a day-long academic symposium and a community-oriented family day of service.
The celebration will begin on Thursday, April 12, with the Inauguration Symposium. The symposium, titled “A Celebration of Research and Its Global Impact,” will feature five prominent scholars from across the country in a series of keynote lectures on a variety of topics. Each of these lecturers holds a number of awards, ranging from Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes to a National Medal of Science. Members of the faculty will introduce and interview the lecturers, in addition to leading focused discussion groups in the weeks prior to the event. The event will also highlight the work of Lehigh students with an exhibition of undergraduate and graduate student research and scholarship in Zoellner’s Burtz Lobby during the symposium.
On Saturday, April 14, the Inauguration Family Day of Service will mark the final day of inauguration events with a series of children’s activities and community service projects organized by Lehigh students, faculty, and staff. A version of Lehigh’s Community Service Office’s “Spring Fling” will bring children to Lehigh for a day of arts and crafts, games, and fun, and there will be a 5K run to benefit charity. President Gast will also lead a community walk, dedicate a community garden, and participate in a mural project led by the Community Artists of Bethlehem along the Bethlehem Greenway.
Alumni are invited and encouraged to attend the inaugural ceremony. All are welcome to attend the symposium, but tickets are required. Tickets are free, and can be ordered on the Zoellner Arts Center website.
