Staff excellence recognized
The award winners were: James A. Tiefenbrunn, associate vice president of the budget office, who received the Hillman Staff Award; J. Bruce Gardiner, interim dean of admissions and financial aid, who received the Lehigh University Award for Distinguished Service; Willard G. Howard, van driver for the Centennial School, who received the Perry & Carol Zirkel Staff Award; and Susan A. Cady, director of admission & planning for the LTS Leadership Group, who received the Louis & Helen Zirkel Library Award.
James A. Tiefenbrunn is associate vice president of the budget office. A 1966 Lehigh graduate, he is a member of Phi Beta Kappa. After military service, Tiefenbrunn joined the Lehigh staff in 1969 in the Residence Halls Office as assistant director and assistant dean. He earned his M.B.A. from Lehigh in 1972. Beginning in 1975, Tiefenbrunn served as business manager of the College of Education and taught accounting in the College of Business and Economics. He also served as assistant to the provost. In 1980, Tiefenbrunn was appointed the university's first director of budget, and in 1995, he was named associate vice president of resource management with responsibility for budget and human resource functions. Tiefenbrunn has been honored before for his service to Lehigh. In 1998 he was awarded the Alumni Association's Paul J. Franz Award and in 1999 he received the University Award for Distinguished Service. Tiefenbrunn is active in various church activities at Our Lady of Perpetual Help parish in Bethlehem, the Diocese of Allentown, and the Newman Foundation at Lehigh.
J. Bruce Gardiner, interim dean of admissions and financial aid, has been at Lehigh for 30 years. He has held the position of interim dean of admissions and financial aid for the past 20 months, during which Lehigh's admissions numbers have improved considerably. The interim dean position is Gardiner's second tour of duty in admissions, having served as the senior associate director for more than 10 years. Before admissions, Gardiner worked in the athletic department and registrar's office at Lehigh.
Susan A. Cady came to Lehigh in 1979 to found two new library initiatives: the Friends of the Libraries and the Lehigh Library Information Service, both continuing today. In 1981 she was appointed Assistant Director for Library Technical Services and led the effort to barcode the book collection and install the first online catalog in time for the opening of the new E. W. Fairchild Martindale Library and Computing Center. In her current position as Director for Library and Technology Services Administrative, Planning and Advancement Services, Cady has responsibility for LTS facilities, publications, budget, and advancement. She coordinates the Friends of the Lehigh Libraries and this past year planned and implemented the celebration of the 125th anniversary of Linderman Library and library services at Lehigh. In 1994, she earned her Ph.D. in the History of Technology at Lehigh. She also holds an MLS (Masters in Library Science) from the University of Illinois and an MPA (Masters in Public Administration) from Lehigh.
