SPOTLIGHT: Edwin F. Ted Scheetz '54

	Scheetz '54 will receive the L in Life Award in April.

Ted Scheetz ’54—who has served as a Lehigh University trustee for the past two-and-a-half decades—will receive the “L in Life” Award on April 25, 2006 at the Essex House in New York City.
“It’s quite an honor,” said Scheetz. “Just looking over the list of past winners makes me quite proud.”
The purpose of the “L in Life” Award, which was established in 1939 by the Lehigh Club of New York, is to recognize a Lehigh alumnus for outstanding achievements in their professional life and for continued devotion and loyal service to the university.
“We canvass a variety of people before making a selection, because we want other people to attest to the person’s character, their loyalty and devotion to the university, as well as to the skill set that they’ve used on Lehigh’s benefit,” said David L. Polakoff ’86, a co-chairperson of the event. “In Ted’s case, everyone gushed about the kind of man he is and what he’s meant to Lehigh, which made his selection a slam dunk.”
Since graduating from Lehigh in 1954 with a bachelor of science in economic statistics and then serving as a Navy officer from 1954-57, Scheetz has enjoyed a highly successful career in the finance field. Scheetz currently serves as the Managing Director of Guyasuta Investment Advisors in Pittsburgh, but he and his wife Teresa split time between the Steel City and Beaufort, S.C.
Even during his highly successful ascent up the corporate ladder, Scheetz has devoted countless hours to institutions that have meant something to him, including serving on the Board of Trustees at his former prep school (Shady Side Academy in Pittsburgh), his alma mater (Lehigh) and Pittsburgh Children’s Hospital.
“Lehigh has a warm place in my heart, because I received an excellent education there,” said Scheetz.
Over the past 25 years, Scheetz has been a trustee of Lehigh University, serving on the executive, student affairs, finance and development committees. He was also the past president of the Lehigh Club of Pittsburgh and has helped with the university’s ongoing “Shine Forever” capital campaign.
On the night he receives the L in Life Award this spring. Scheetz will be joined by his wife Teresa and their four grown children, including his 43-year-old son Peter who will serve as one of the speakers that night. Gregory Farrington, Lehigh president, is also scheduled to join members of the Lehigh Club of New York in honoring Scheetz.
“I’m looking forward to it,” admits Scheetz. “It’ll be quite a night.”
