Softball team is Nebraska-bound
The Lehigh softball team learned its NCAA Tournament fate on Sunday evening, and the Mountain Hawks are headed to Bowlin Stadium in Lincoln, Nebraska, to play the University of Nebraska.
The Mountain Hawks earned an automatic bid to the postseason by winning their sixth Patriot League title earlier this month. In the process, Lehigh (40-15-2) established a new school and Patriot League record with its 40th victory of the season.
Meanwhile, Nebraska (42-15) swept its way through the Big 12 tournament to earn that conference’s automatic berth to the NCAA field.
Other first-round matchups in Region 5 include Florida Atlantic (54-16) vs. Creighton (41-15-1) at 11 a.m. ET, Mississippi State (38-24) vs. Iowa (38-22) at 4:00 p.m. ET, and Maine (27-21) vs. top-seeded Cal (46-11) at 6:30 p.m. ET. Those games will all take place in Lincoln.
Sixty-four teams qualified for the championship field. There are eight sites featuring eight teams, with one moving on from each location to the Women’s College World Series in Oklahoma City. Each regional site features a double-elimination format.
In 2001, Lehigh became the first Patriot League school to ever win an NCAA tournament game, when the Mountain Hawks blanked Seton Hall by a 2-0 score in Norman, Oklahoma.
