Shade is Fulbright Fellow in Russia
The Chair is at the Russian Federation. Shade, who is in Russia as a Fulbright Fellow, has been teaching a course on American political party development.
A political and social historian of 19th century America, Shade is the author and/or editor of 14 books and nearly 40 scholarly articles.
Earlier in his academic career, Shade served as a Fulbright Fellow in Ireland (1978-79), as a Virginia Center for the Humanities Fellow (1987), and as a Mellon Research Fellow at the Virginia Historical Society (1999). He also taught at Wayne State University, Temple University, Lafayette College, the University of Virginia, University College Galway, the National University of Ireland, the University of Nottingham, Limerick University and Mary Immaculate College.
In 1998, Shade won the Avery O. Craven Prize from the American Historical Association for the best book on the Civil War era for his book Democratizing the Old Dominion: Virginia and the Second Party System, 1824-1861.
With William R. Scott, chair of Africana Studies at Lehigh, Shade also co-authored Upon These Shores: Themes in the African-American Experience 1600 to present (2000). And he co-wrote Presidential Campaigns and Elections with Ballard Campbell and Craig Cornen.
At Lehigh, Shade received the 1988 Eleanor and Joseph F. Libsch Research Award, and served as director of the American Studies program and as co-director of the Lawrence Henry Gipson Institute for Eighteenth Century Studies.
Shade also served on the advisory board for the Secretary of the Interior for National Parks, Historic Sites and Monuments, and for the Academic Advisory Council of the Balch Institute for Ethnic Studies, the Council of the Society of Historians of the Early Republic, and the Pennsylvania Historical Association.
