State Dept. Eyes Realignment of Iraq Reconstruction Funds

Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about the realignment of Iraq reconstruction funds. Now, with the rebels' attacks wreaking havoc on security and holding progress on the big-ticket expenditures to a trickle, the US Embassy in Baghdad is calling on Washington to reorient a chunk of the allocation toward addressing the insurgency. “Security is turning out to be a much larger problem, and you can't spend money on infrastructure if the security isn't there, says Barkey, also a former State Department analyst on Iraq. But spending money where you didn't think you'd have to also means you won't be providing what you led people to believe would be coming.

Roland Yoshida to Chair the ETS Visiting Panel on Research; 22nd Year Since Harold Howe Chaired the First Panel

Roland Yoshida, Lehigh University Provost and Academic Affairs Vice President, has been selected to chair the ETS Visiting Panel on Research, company officials announced today. In this capacity he will help continue ETS's longstanding commitment to openness in educational testing. The ETS Visiting Panel on Research, an external advisory group composed of distinguished education experts and policy-makers from organizations and universities across the country, is charged with reviewing the quality and appropriateness of ETS's research programs. Yoshida is the author of more than 60 scholarly articles. His studies have examined ways to change teachers' behavior; how to improve academic opportunities for elementary school children with learning disabilities, and relationships between parents and schools. He has most recently focused on the ways in which new technologies are transforming learning environments, especially those of residential universities.

High-Tech Popular with Students

Students from Lehigh University and Lafayette and Muhlenberg colleges were mentioned in an article about stores expecting big sales on back-to-school gadgets. Eric Rigler, manager of Tweeter Etc., said “students from Lehigh University and Lafayette and Muhlenberg colleges are generally his biggest customers, and will start visiting his store when they return to school around the end of the month.”
