Diploma Regarded as Ticket out of the Region for Many
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about being one of the first two Keystone Innovation Zones. With his administration, Gov. Rendell proposed a new program aimed at helping the economy around universities to give opportunities to students immediately after graduation. The first two of these Keystone Innovation Zones were designated in July at Lehigh University in Bethlehem and Lancaster's Franklin & Marshall College.

A Lively and Fiery Fall
Howard Finster and Lehigh University go together, well, like Jesus and Elvis. The sacred/popular artist, who painted both deities, visited the Bethlehem school three times, starting with a memorable 1986 residency. Lehigh gave Finster his first computer for making art and a scholarly prominence. Finster, in turn, helped make Lehigh a center for self-taught artists with raw materials and raw visions. This fall, Lehigh will celebrate its relationship with a celebrated creator. From Sept. 29 to Dec. 19, the university will present three exhibitions devoted to Finster (1916-2001), who helped turn outsider artists into insiders. Co-curator Norman Girardot, a professor of comparative religion at Lehigh, compares Finster to medieval mystics, tribal shamans and sophisticated pop artists.
Other upcoming Lehigh events include Rufus Wainwright, Dance Theatre of Harlem, and “Desire Under the Elms.”

Upcoming shows at Zoellner Arts Center include the following: One Afternoon, Two Divas: Lehigh Valley favorites Debra Field, soprano, and Leslie Johnson, mezzo-soprano, perform Haydn, Mozart, Bellini, September 12; Trio Lipatti: Haydn, Brahms and Dvorak: Pianist Eugene Albulescu and fellow Romanians honor Bohemian and Gypsy influences, September 18; Winterreise: Eduardo Azzati, baritone, and Martha Schrempel, piano, perform Schubert's epic song cycle depicting a jilted lover's journey through a winter landscape and into madness, September 26.
