What Children Belong in Special Ed?
Perry Zirkel, professor of education and law in the College of Education at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about a suit over a student with a neurological disorder that raises questions about how far expensive special education should extend. “Special education is making us rethink what education is,” said Zirkel. Many educators agree that education expands beyond books, he says, but opinions differ across districts on where the line should be drawn. “Is it just reading, writing and arithmetic? Or should education be interpreted more broadly to include interaction with others and social skills?”

Philadelphia’s Church-School Experiment
Zirkel also offered commentary regarding Philadelphia's church-school experiment. Philadelphia School District's goal is to have all 256 of its schools “adopted” by at least one nearby church, synagogue, mosque, or temple. The district believes that schools embraced by faith communities will help students navigate often-volatile home and neighborhood environments. Zirkel says that given its broad scope, some or all of the Philadelphia plan is likely to be challenged in court. In that huge city of Philadelphia, all you need is one person to challenge whether [that person] has a better plan or not. The outcome of such a challenge is anybody’s guess, due to fluid laws, variations in their interpretation, and the personal bias of individual judges, says Zirkel.

Innovation Zone Created in Philadelphia’s University City
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about the Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ). The state of Pennsylvania has approved a plan to create a KIZ in Philadelphia's University City section. The plan is the third approved by the state under a new program to use technology from Pennsylvania's colleges and universities to promote economic development around the schools. The other two KIZs are located in Lancaster, Pa., around Franklin & Marshall College, and Bethlehem, Pa., around Lehigh University.

Rendell Makes It Clear: Driscoll is his Choice for Congress
Lehigh University’s Campus Square was mentioned in an article about Gov. Ed Rendell praising state Sen. Charlie Dent, while fully endorsing Joe Driscoll. “Charlie has been a great help on our economic development projects and helping to make this economic stimulus package a reality,” Rendell says in the commercial. The remarks were recorded during a news conference at Lehigh University's Campus Square on July 14 when Rendell presented a $250,000 check to help the college and local technology businesses form a Keystone Innovation Zone. The program is a cornerstone of Rendell's economic stimulus package, which is intended to create partnerships among universities, businesses and their communities in targeted areas to foster innovation and incubate new businesses.
