Lehigh was featured on CNN Headline News as the host of a presidential campaign focus group. “As fall begins, here we are at Lehigh University, the heart of the Lehigh Valley and the center of the swing state of Pennsylvania,” segment said. The eight-minute segment aired on Friday night and included beautiful scenes of Lehigh’s campus and Linderman Library.

Naming Rights Become the Honorable Thing to Do
Karen Becker-Olson, visiting professor of management and marketing at Lehigh and author of “Questioning the Name Game,” was quoted in an article about how branding your family or business name on something may not always be the best idea. “You can get a backlash on it. In the social sponsorship, we see the biggest backlash when there is a poor fit for the organization,” said Becker-Olson. “For example, it doesn't make sense for Exxon to sponsor the World Wildlife Foundation.”

Vouchers Remain Volatile Battleground for States
Perry Zirkel, professor of education and law in the College of Education at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about the “politics” of school vouchers. “From inside his office at Lehigh University, Professor Perry Zirkel, who specializes in education and law issues, considers the impact of that 2002 Supreme Court decision,” the article says. “It was supposed to change American education, right? Not exactly,” says Zirkel. “I think people made too much of a fuss about this initial hurdle being removed by the Supreme Court. We realize now the hardest part is not the constitutional issue of whether vouchers are permissible, but the much more difficult question about whether a particular state will have vouchers.”

For an annual fashion show presented by international students of the Global Village program at Lehigh University, Paulette Elstner designed an 18-foot blue, orange, red and yellow clown balloon arch sculpture for the Camelot House in Allentown. Special occasions in life are what Elstner patterns her art after by inflating and manipulating biodegradable latex into lasting sculpture.

At Lehigh University, Moravian College and the Banana Factory, “Figure Sculpting with Karel Mikolas” will be offered 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, starting next Saturday and running through Nov. 20. Participants will sculpt from clay using the human form as a model. The class, Mikolas’ first in more than 30 years, will cover the classical and modern styles of sculpture, and the making of an armature, the support framework.
