Kenneth Kraft, professor of religion studies at Lehigh, was quoted in an article on a look at creativity and how it can be encouraged. In Zen the word 'mind' is also a symbol for the consciousness of the universe itself,” says Kraft, a Buddhist scholar who has spent many years in Japan. It's taught in Zen that one performs an action so completely that one loses oneself in the doing of it, Kraft explains. A master calligrapher, for example, is working in a no-minded way…No-mindedness means not to have the mind filled with random thoughts like, 'Does this calligraphy look right? Should that stroke go there or here?' It's just doing. Just the stroke.

Perry Zirkel, professor of education and law in the College of Education at Lehigh, wrote an article about the increasing demand on special education. In the article he cited a specific case of an Ohio kindergartener who was diagnosed with autism, making him eligible for an early intervention program under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA). “This Coolidge case illustrates the competing concerns of the individual child with a disability under the IDEA and the increased interest—in the wake of Columbine and 9/11—in school safety,” Zirkel wrote.

Pennsylvania Announces First KIZ Recipients
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about being certified by the state Department of Community and Economic Development to participate in the Keystone Innovation Zone (KIZ) program, a cornerstone of the Governor’s economic stimulus initiative. The KIZ program designates zones in college and university communities that are meant to foster innovation and create entrepreneurial opportunities in an effort to keep college graduates in Pennsylvania.

Teachers Crack the DaVinci Code through Summer Class
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about being part of a partnership between Cedar Crest College, the DaVinci Discover Center of Science and Technology, the Lehigh Valley Business Education Partnership and some local school districts that began a three-year DaVinci Institute science teacher leadership program at Cedar Crest College. The program is a two-week per summer three-year workshop aimed at developing inquiry-based science learning in the classroom.

At Zoellner Arts Center on Sunday at 3:00, there's an opportunity to hear a remarkable set of songs by the composer generally agreed to have been the master of the art song, Franz Schubert. Baritone Eduardo Azzati and pianist Martha Schrempel will perform the song cycle ''Die Winterreise'' (''Winter Journey''). The cycle of 24 songs, all set to poems by Wilhelm Müller, depicts not a physical journey, but rather the dark emotional journey of someone disappointed in love.

Wyalusing Ram Wrestlers to Host Elementary Wrestling Clinic
Lehigh University head wrestling coach Greg Strobel will be on hand as a guest clinician during the elementary wrestling clinic sponsored by the Wyalusing Wrestling Booster Club and members of the Ram’s varsity wrestling team. Strobel is highly regarded around the nation as one of the top ambassadors for the sport of wrestling and has served on the U.S.A. Olympic Freestyle wrestling team's coaching staff and was the head coach for the 2000 Olympic Games. Since he took over the team during the 1995-96 Season, he has compiled a 129-51 record and has coached 24 NCAA All-Americans including two national champions (Troy Letters in 2004 and Rob Rohn in 2002). In 2004, Strobel guided the Mountain Hawks to a third place finish at the national tournament and had five wrestlers finish with All-American status. The clinic will take place in November.
