The Labor Market Dance
Richard Durand, Herbert E. Ehlers Dean of the College of Business and Economics at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about business being responsible for learning. “I believe that professional education is changing so dramatically that there is no way to assume that faculty know what employers want and need,” Durand says. “So we have instituted a market-driven approach to new programs.” Lehigh, a university with a distinguished tradition in the arts and humanities, is continually redesigning its programs as a result of intensive ongoing planning sessions between faculty and business leadership, “which,” Durand says, “has resulted in a business minor that is available to students in all of the university’s fields of study.” As a private institution, without faculty unions, Lehigh has been able to move nimbly in bringing new products to market.

An article was recently published on Muriel and Philip Berman, who developed Lehigh University’s Muriel Berman Center for Jewish Studies. The story was about the Bermans’ legacy as serial philanthropists, parental patrons who endowed people as well as programs.

Dividend, Tuition and Pension Policies Should Change
Eli Schwartz, professor emeritus of finance and economics at Lehigh, wrote an op-ed about with the outcome of the forthcoming election, presumably there will be some domestic policy changes. “Here are three suggestions that are not very far off center, but that could do much on a practical level to address economic problems,” he wrote. “The current favorable tax rate on dividends received on the personal level should be repealed. Suggestion two argues that the most direct way to ease the cost of financing higher education is to expand the availability of scholarship loan programs. The third suggestion calls for the abolishing of all private corporation and all state and local government defined-benefit pension programs.

Group Mobilizes to Preserve Steel’s Past
Sally Handlon, program director of Lehigh University's Small Business Development Center, was quoted in an article about the final sale of Bethlehem Works to a real estate investor. She said the organization first needs to get state legislators involved to put financial leverage against the developers. They're going to need a lot of public money to develop that project, Handlon said. Taxpayers are going to pay for that site one way or another.
