Rock the Vote recruits young voters
Vote for Kerry. Vote for Bush. Heck, pull a lever for Nader if you want, but by all means vote. That was the message Sunday when the Rock the Vote nationwide bus tour invaded Lehigh University for a free concert that organizers hoped would entice students to register for the November election. The tour sponsored by the likes of MTV and Sunkist rolled onto Lehigh's Mountaintop Campus to put on a one-day crash course in Politics 101.

Wi-Fi for the masses
Bethlehem's South Side could become the first large area in the Lehigh Valley and one of the first in the state to go completely wireless. Ben Franklin Technology Partners and Lehigh University have formed a committee to examine the potential for a wireless network, which would be part of a Keystone Innovation Zone announced in July. The zone is envisioned as a place where entrepreneurs, students and recent graduates draw on research done at area colleges to form startup companies. Lehigh is aggressively targeting ''technology transfer,'' in which research done at the university is converted into commercial products and services. The university announced last week it has hired staff to focus on encouraging entrepreneurship and on licensing and patenting inventions.

Politics, pain fog Sept. 11 memories
Lloyd Steffen, Lehigh University Chaplain and professor of religion studies, was quoted in an article on the third anniversary of the September 11th attacks. As families of those who perished on Sept. 11, 2001, commemorate the terrorist attacks today, many worry that the nation is forgetting their loved ones' sacrifice. Others say the impending presidential election has tainted the way Americans remember the tragedy. I think that as a nation there is some healing that has taken place in response, said Steffen. The politicization of it in the presidential campaign may not be the healthiest response. If you remember it too much are you favoring one candidate over another?

Great South Side Sale
The annual Great South Side Sale took place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, September 11 at Third and Polk Streets behind the Discovery Center of Science and Technology. Sale organizers took items donated by Lehigh University students who have moved out, sold them and donated the proceeds to the South Bethlehem Neighborhood Center's youth programs.

Shop owners glad roadwork done
The echoing din of paving trucks and the dank smell and dark smoke of fresh asphalt hit the four blocks of W. Fourth Street in south Bethlehem for one last time Friday as business owners and residents kissed goodbye to a long, noisy and unusually slow summer. PennDOT's contractor and the city worked together to plan around the normally slow summer months when Lehigh University students are gone.
