The No-Win Solution
Rajan Menon, professor of international relations at Lehigh University, wrote an Op-Ed on the situation in Iraq, stating that America’s withdrawal without victory seems inevitable. “It’s just a matter of when,” he said. “George W. Bush and John F. Kerry have more in common on Iraq than is generally believed, or than either acknowledges. Both candidates would continue the war, and they agree that withdrawing without victory is not an option…Both believe an elected Iraqi government will yield a legitimate Iraqi government and enable the war to wind down. There's only one problem with this reasoning: It’s wrong. The risks of a U.S. departure are real: Things could get worse in Iraq. But it's hardly clear that we are making things better by staying. Meanwhile, we are promised an Iraq that sows democracy in the Middle East by force of example, told that a new occupant in the White House will assemble a truly international coalition that will ease our burdens, and treated to the mantra that the war must be won. This is a denial of reality. Sooner or later, the American public will catch on. Most Iraqis already have.”

Turnaround Principal – It’s the Law
Perry A. Zirkel, professor of education and law in the College of Education at Lehigh, wrote an article in the September/October 2004 issue of Principal Magazine on the responsibilities that public schools have to protect the health of their students. “Approximately half of the states require schools to implement health standards, including physical exams, as a prerequisite to attendance,” he wrote. “All 50 states require public school students to be vaccinated against diseases such as diphtheria, measles, and rubella. And, according to the American Academy of Pediatrics, most public schools also provide vision and hearing screening as well as dental and dermatological checks.”

A Homecoming for Lehigh Star
Greg Fay, a junior fullback on the Lehigh University football team, who was born in Framingham and lived for a time in Medfield, will have a chance to visit with friends and family when Lehigh plays at Holy Cross next Saturday. Last weekend, with Lehigh on a bye week, Fay, an avid Red Sox fan, made the five-hour drive to Fenway Park for the Red Sox-Yankees game just for a standing-room-only ticket. He drove back to Bethlehem, Pa., the next morning to make a 1 p.m. football practice. Fay moved to Tennessee from Massachusetts and was an All-State football player at the University School in Jackson. Fay's grandfather, Bernard Gattozzi, lives in Medway and plans to attend the Holy Cross game. Fay scored three touchdowns as a sophomore at Lehigh, which was ranked 21st nationally in Division 1-AA last week. His father, Bob Fay, played high school football at Boston English High. “Greg has been a steady contributor and a class act both on and off the field,” said Lehigh head coach Pete Lembo.

Ben Franklin Makes Loan to Bethlehem Biotech Firm
A start-up biomedical company in Bethlehem and a business incubator in Allentown received development loans, part of the latest round of funding announced Tuesday by a regional high-tech business support agency. Saladax Biomedical Inc. of Bethlehem received $150,000 from the Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania, also based in Bethlehem. Allentown's Bridgeworks Enterprise Center received a $20,000 loan from the technology group. Bridgeworks is one of nine incubators — low-cost centers where small companies can grow — in a regional network led by Ben Franklin. All told, Ben Franklin announced $592,000 in low-interest loans to eight companies and incubators.
