The Crusade Against Evolution
Michael Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, was mentioned in an article along with his 1996 book, “Darwin’s Black Box.” Behe contended that natural selection can’t explain the “irreducible complexity” of molecular mechanisms like the bacterial flagellum, because its integrated parts offer no selective advantages on their own. Two years later, in “The Design Inference,” William Dembski, a philosopher and mathematician at Baylor University, proposed that any biological system exhibiting “information” that is both “complex” (highly improbably) and “specified” (serving a particular function) cannot be a product of chance or natural law. The only remaining option is an intelligent designer – whether God or an alien life force. These ideas became the cornerstones of Behe's theory, Intelligent Design, and he proclaimed the evidence for design to be “one of the greatest achievements in the history of science.”

Sparrows Point’s Owner is Sold to Dutch Company
Mary Deily, associate professor of economics at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about ISG being sold to Indian-born billionaire Lakshmi N. Mittal for $4.5 billion, creating the world’s largest steelmaker. “I think if China continues to grow, we should see stronger steel prices for some time,” said Deily. Ross has succeeded in turning around ISG largely through favorable labor deals that have become the envy of the industry, she said. Those agreements have provided fuel for the latest round of consolidation in the industry. The deal should be good news for Sparrows Point, Deily said, because the plant has port access and is the only integrated steel plant on the Eastern Seaboard. That opens up opportunities for Mittal to ship European steel and raw materials to Baltimore for further finishing and sale in America. “I don't see why they'd buy ISG if they didn't want to hang on to the capacity, and Sparrows Point doesn't seem like one that would be marked for closing,” she said.

Mind Your Political Manners
Elizabeth Scofield, director of Lehigh University’s Zoellner Arts Centers, was quoted in an article about manners and politics. Manners that apply to everyday conflicts are especially important in the hyper, hyped-up final days of Campaign 2004, etiquette experts say. Scofield, who teaches an etiquette course at Lehigh, points out that political talk is considered bad etiquette because etiquette is about making people feel comfortable. Sometimes political talk does anything but. So the decision whether to talk politics is personal: “If you want to avoid discomfort, you avoid the subject,” Scofield says. If someone tries to engage you in political talk and you're uncomfortable with that, there are a plenty of ways to deflect the topic. “You don't have to tell anyone your thoughts. You could say, ‘There's a reason the Constitution guarantees a private vote. I'd rather not discuss politics,’” she says.

The Lehigh University Choral Arts concerts this Friday and Saturday, called “Visions, Evocations and Dreams,” can be described as much as a “circus sideshow” as a “musical celebration” of the university's 130 years of choral music, the Choral Union's 20th anniversary and Steven Sametz's quarter century as a Lehigh educator. Concert-goers will find quite a different atmosphere from the usual formal surroundings.

On Thursday, the Manufacturers Resource Center workshop, “Generating Sales Leads,” featuring Dennis Caruso, author and professional motivational sales trainer, will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 125 Goodman Drive, Bethlehem.
