Lehigh U. Opens Drive to Collect $500 Million
Lehigh University publicly launched the largest fund raiser in its 140-year history on Friday — a $500 million capital campaign designed to bolster the college's ability to recruit top students and faculty. By 2010, the campaign is expected to buoy the university endowment to $1 billion, spawn 500 scholarships, fund 75 endowed faculty positions, and double the level of alumni contributions the school receives annually. About $198 million, including a $6 million gift from one alumnus, has already been raised. “Ultimately, what determines the quality of a university is the quality of its people.…You can have all the beautiful buildings in the world but if you don't have great people, it's not going to work,” Gregory Farrington, president of Lehigh, said.

Lehigh University Announces El-Aasser Will be New Provost
Mohamed El-Aasser, professor and dean of the P.C. Rossin College of Engineering and Applied Science, was named Lehigh University provost last week. El-Aasser, who has been at Lehigh for 29 years, succeeds Ron Yoshida, who last month was named senior vice president for external relations and campus life. “I have asked Mohamed to continue to focus the office of the provost on the academic and intellectual life of the campus, including fostering an environment supportive of success on the part of our faculty, effective shared governance, diversity and the distinctiveness and competitiveness of our undergraduate and graduate programs,” Gregory Farrington, president of Lehigh, said. El-Aasser is internationally known for his research on polymer colloids and emulsion polymerization processes.

Lehigh’s Rauch Business Center Sees Its Stock Go Up
When Joseph Perella went to Lehigh University in the early '60s, he and his fellow finance majors never seemed to have facilities as nice as the ones in Lehigh's well-known engineering department. On Saturday, Perella and 100 others gathered at Lehigh to open the school's new financial services laboratory, a high-tech testament to how times have changed. Perella, an investment banker and member of the Class of 1964, was a leading donor. The $3.5 million financial services lab features a “trading room”-style classroom with 25 wireless laptop stations, where students can obtain and review all kinds of financial data. A colorful trading board on the wall flashes market results and financial highlights, adding to the Wall Street atmosphere. The intent, officials said, is to give students access to the kinds of information they will dissect when they graduate to careers in finance or related fields. “I tell my students, ‘You play how you practice,’” finance assistant professor Anne-Marie Anderson said. “We should teach them now how to use the tools they will have when they leave here.”

Lehigh U. Establishes a Dean of Athletics Post
Lehigh will become the first Division I school to have a dean of athletics, college officials announced Friday after receiving a $6 million donation to create the position and strengthen its athletics department. Lehigh alumnus Murray H. Goodman gave Lehigh the money as part of the school's $500 million capital campaign that was publicly launched Friday. University athletic director Joe Sterrett, a former All-American quarterback who graduated from Lehigh in 1976, will assume the new title, which President Farrington described as “both unusual and highly significant.”

On Tuesday, Manufacturers Resource Center Green Belt Certification Six Sigma program, a three-day course resulting in a certification from the Institute of Industrial Engineers, will take place from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., 125 Goodman Drive, Bethlehem and continue Wednesday and Thursday. Also on Tuesday, the Lehigh University Small Business Development Center (SBDC) Women Business Owner Series final session on “What Are You Working So Hard For?” will take place from 2-5:30 p.m. at the Glasbern Inn, Weisenberg Township.
On Wednesday, the SBDC bus trip to the Philadelphia Regional Port Authority and UPS International Air Hub to learn about international trade procedures will take place from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
On Thursday, Manufacturers Resource Center Strategic Innovations Network, a series of 10 sessions on the third Thursday of each month, will take place from 2:30-4:30 p.m., 125 Goodman Drive, Bethlehem. Each session is hosted by an expert on topics like innovative marketing and sales techniques. Also on Thursday, the SBDC Business Basics class, third and final session with a panel of experts in law, banking, accounting and marketing available for questions, will take place from 6:30-9:30 p.m., Room 91, Rauch Business Center, 621 Taylor St., Bethlehem.

Lehigh University Plans a Late Night Campus Hangout
In an attempt to satiate student hunger for an after-dark hangout, Lehigh University will open a late-night — possibly 24-hour — diner on its south Bethlehem campus. Despite a dizzying array of pubs and restaurants in the Christmas City, Lehigh officials said the multimillion-dollar diner, slated to open in January 2006, fulfills an unmet need for a late-night social option for students too young to enter the city's bars. “This is being student-driven. Students have made it clear that this is what they want,” said Michelle Samuels, associate dean of students. The diner will open in Lamberton Hall, a 21,000-square-foot sprawling stone building that the university's board of trustees voted this year to gut and turn into a student activities complex. The two-story restaurant will consume nearly half the building with the remaining space devoted to an atrium-style “great room,” which will essentially serve as an updated version of the student lounge.

By June 2006, Pennridge School officials may forgo the outdoor football stadium tradition and graduate from Stabler Arena, an indoor venue at Lehigh University in Bethlehem. Principal Tom Creeden said school officials have made no decisions but have toured the building and are considering it. With the senior class growing larger each year and the constant threat that Mother Nature will rain on its pomp and circumstance, Pennridge School officials are considering moving graduation indoors.
