International Security Journal
Chaim Kaufmann, associate professor of international relations, authored an article on how the Bush administration sold the public on an inflated version of the Iraqi threat in a recent issue of International Security journal. The article, titled Threat Inflation and the Failure of the Marketplace of Ideas: The Selling of the Iraq War, claims that the Bush administration were determined to bring about regime change in Iraq from early 2001 and began a public campaign to generate support for a preventive war to achieve this objective. The marketplace of ideas failed to correct the administration's misrepresentations or hinder its ability to persuade the American public, Kaufmann wrote.

Plan Ahead: Celebrate Choral Arts
Steven Sametz will celebrate his 25th anniversary as choral director at Lehigh University with two Choral Arts concerts Oct. 29 and 30. ''Visions, Evocations and Dreams'' will feature circus characters, Indian dancers and a 30-foot puppet of Vishnu to accompany masterpieces from five continents that stimulate the imagination. Prayer and Politics for Ramadan
John Pettegrew, associate professor of history and Robert Rozehnal, assistant professor religion studies at Lehigh University, were quoted in an article about Mohamed Bugaighis, former president of the Muslim Association of the Lehigh Valley, being questioned on a recent trip from Scotland. In times of war the U.S. government has restricted civil liberties as a practical matter because of national security, said Pettegrew. Most Muslims abhorred Saddam Hussein because he was a secular Bathist with no respect for religion, said Rozehnal. But now religious identity is associated in that region in a way that it hasn't been before.

A photograph of Lehigh University sophomore Rebecca Guzman working out on an ergometer at the Taylor Gymnasium’s Welch Fitness Center appeared in the local section. Guzman, a member of the varsity crew team, says she burned 774 calories and rowed the equivalent of 13,195 meters on Thursday. The team practices 2-1/2 hours every morning on the Lehigh River. “I love it,” she says. “Once you get started, you get addicted.”

It’s “Midnight Madness” for Lehigh
Tonight, at Lehigh University’s Grace Hall, will be the first-ever “Midnight Madness.” ESPN Trey Wingo will be on hand to host the event, which is free to the public. The event, which begins at 11:30 and could last until 1:00 a.m. Saturday, will include slam-dunk, half-court shooting and eating contests among fraternities, and plenty of giveaways. “It’s a really great opportunity,” said Lehigh coach Billy Taylor. “I think the fact that it’s being organized by a student group, which is where the push came from, is more exciting for myself and our student-athletes. Coach Sue Troyan’s women’s team and her players will also be in attendance to soak up the atmosphere and show off their shooting and dribbling skills.

A More Comprehensive City History
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about city officials creating a South Bethlehem Downtown National Historic District. “For decades, the South Side has had a blue-collar, working-class image of a city stuck between the blast furnace stacks of the steel company and the ivied halls of Lehigh University,” the article said. Over the next few weeks, city officials will consider a draft for creating a South Bethlehem Downtown National Historic District. It's an effort that complements the work of preserving what's left of the Bethlehem Steel plant and converting it into an economic hub of retail, entertainment, tourist and business activity. ''I think it will be a major tool for us in bringing development to the South Side,'' said Lehigh alum Tony Hanna, the city's director of community and economic development.

Congressional Candidates Dent and Driscoll to Debate Next Thursday
Plans are set for the only major-party debate in the 15th Congressional District at 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 21 at Lehigh University's Zoellner Center for the Arts. Republican Charlie Dent and Democrat Joe Driscoll will face each other one-on-one before a live audience in a program to be televised on PBS 39.

The National Science Foundation will no longer require colleges to put their own dollars into research projects that the agency finances. Under the policy change, approved on Thursday, colleges will, however, still have to provide one percent of the grant amount on unsolicited projects.
