Buddhist Gathering Will Be First of Its Kind in Philadelphia Area
Kenneth Kraft, professor of religion studies at Lehigh and author of several books on Buddhism, will open speak at a conference on Sunday, Oct. 24. The Won Institute will host a conference on “Buddhism in the Delaware Valley.” The gathering is expected to attract practitioners, scholars, and interested newcomers. The event is open to the public. His talk is entitled “What is the Sound of the Liberty Bell? Reflections on Buddhism and Democracy.” Dr. Kraft is a leading interpreter of socially engaged Buddhism, which applies traditional Buddhist teachings to current social and political problems. In a recent interview on the Abu Ghraib prison abuses, he said, “The ability to act responsibly is not simply a matter of having the ‘right’ beliefs. There has to be some inner cultivation of character.”

Voters Challenged to Consider Principles, Minister Tells Audience at Lehigh University to Overcome Cowardice
The Rev. James Forbes Jr. brought his nationwide tour promoting justice and equality in light of the upcoming election to a crowded Packer Memorial Church on Tuesday. Forbes, a senior minister with Riverside Church in New York City, began the Interfaith Mobilization 2004 movement in March and has been touring the country to talk about his 10 “prophetic faith principles.” He focused his speech Tuesday on his internal struggles with courage and urged residents to overcome their own cowardice as he is trying to do.

Democrats Make Pitch for Youth Vote
Greg Thielmann, former State Department insider, will speak in Packard Auditorium at Lehigh this evening. Thielmann, who served as the Head of the Proliferation Analysis Office in the State Department's intelligence bureau, now speaks out against the Bush administration, claiming America is less safe today than before the war in Iraq. Because the Keystone State plays such an important role in this election, school administrators are trying to raise relevant issues that pertain to students, Conroy added.

Lehigh University Athletics, together with the Yale Cancer Center and Yale-New Haven Hospital, are offering free tickets to Connecticut cancer patients and their families to watch the Yale University Bulldogs play Lehigh University on Oct. 16 at 1 p.m. at the Historic Yale Bowl.

Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about La Salle’s Andrew Rocks, who is drawing interest from Penn, Princeton, Dartmouth and Lehigh. Rocks, a two-way lineman and co-captain, will have surgery today for a broken right leg and torn ankle ligaments suffered Sunday vs. O'Hara. He had missed the previous game with a sprain of that same ankle. With a 3.79 GPA and 1,280 SAT score, the 6-foot, 220-pound Rocks is drawing interest from Penn, Princeton, Dartmouth, Lehigh, et al.

Officials Eye 2nd Bethlehem Historic District
Some of the buildings that Lehigh University uses for storage are included in the South Side’s program that would offer tax credits to restore them to grandeur. In the coming weeks, Bethlehem officials will review a draft proposal to create the South Bethlehem Downtown National Historic District, a designation that would ease the way for property owners to claim tax credits if they restore the buildings. The program is administered by the National Park Service.
