Debate Rages Over Turkey Troop Snafu

Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, was interviewed for an article on the stalemate over planned deployment of 10,000 Turkish troops to back the occupation of Iraq. Americans went to the Turks (on troops) before they went to the IGC and then compounded the error by trying to overrule the Iraqis when they began speaking out against a Turkish deployment, Barkey said.

In Design We Trust

Michael Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh and his book Darwin's Black Box were mentioned in an article on Intelligent Design. Behe is a forerunner in the growing Intelligent Design movement that urges science is not the antithesis of faith as a creator, but rather the foundation for it. The idea is that modern science proves the existence of God, the article said.

Summer Blackout Raises Economic Questions

Eli Schwartz, professor emeritus of economics and finance at Lehigh, wrote an Op-ed on questions raised about the summer blackout. The surface explanation for the blackout is not too difficult. A breakdown somewhere in Ohio caused a surge in the power demanded from other suppliers to the interconnected grid, and one by one, they went out of service, he wrote. But I have other questions that I would like to pose to U.S. Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham and his high-level committee no investigating the problem.

LU-LC Game Sold Out Again

Lehigh Athletics announced Wednesday that reserved tickets for the Lafayette football game on Nov. 22 have been sold out. A limited number of standing room tickets were made available Thursday morning, but those sold out quickly, and are no longer available. This marks the eighth straight year that the Lehigh-Lafayette football game at Goodman Stadium has been sold out in advance.

Together at the Top Again

As buses carrying the Lehigh University football depart for Hamilton, N.Y. this morning, the players, coaches and support staff will be pondering countless scenarios that could come into play during Saturday's impending showdown with Colgate in a game that will leave the winner alone atop the Patriot League standings. One or both of these programs have claimed at least a share of the league crown every year since 1997.

As a coach, when you look ahead to the season and you plan your schedule over the summer, you hope that, come November, you'll be playing some meaningful football games, Lehigh coach Pete Lembo said, and that's where we are right now.

Tulum Offers a Taste of its Original and Fresh 'Beth-Mex'

Tulum, named for the Mexican ruins of the Mexican Yucatan, provides south of the border fast food. The restaurant, located across the street from Lehigh's Campus Square, calls its cuisine Beth-Mex, and the place opened in March because a couple of friends from Bethlehem, who frequently visit the original Tulum, just love the place and its food.
