'Ramaniscing' About Catalysts
Israel E. Wachs, professor of chemical engineering at Lehigh, was quoted in an article on a symposium that spotlighted the use of spectroscopy methods in catalysis. In recent years, Raman spectroscopy in catalysis has taken off exponentially, said Wachs. One of the reasons for its popularity is that the method provides molecular-level information about catalysis, and another reason is that the technique can be used to probe catalytic systems while the reactions are occurring, he said.

Peter Zeitler, professor of earth and environmental science at Lehigh, answered a question about whether or not erosion is helping the Himalayas grow. We believe that the manner and rate at which surface rocks are being chiseled away by erosion affects what is happening 10 to 30 kilometers below the Earth's surface, Zeitler said. Zeitler's study, which he is doing together with Anne Meltzer, also a professor of earth and environmental science at Lehigh, combines short-timescale seismological, geomorphic and GPS (global positioning system) measurements and observations made over a longer period of time, including geochronologic, petrologic and structural measurements.

Tom Hyclak, professor of economics at Lehigh, was quoted in a story about Fastnet's buy-out by US LEC, a telecommunications company in North Carolina. It is common in mergers and acquisitions to eliminate redundant positions, especially in marketing, accounting, engineering and administration, said Hyclak. You only need one CEO and you cut the cost of the second.
