Mining for Gold
Lehigh University's Young Alumni Association won the Council for the Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) Seal of Excellence for Alumni Relations award. In 2001, the 5 and 10-year reunion drew 90 guests, and in 2002, the Young Alumni Reunion drew 765 guests. What drove the dramatic increase? Complete overhaul. In a survey of young alumni, close to 95 percent indicated they had no desire to attend a reunion in June, when the campus was empty and unfamiliar, said Bob Wolfenden, director of alumni career development. So Wolfenden planned a Young Alumni Reunion for the fall semester.

PeopleSoft Suddenly Turns Silent
Parveen Gupta, associate professor of accounting at Lehigh, was interviewed for a story on Oracle's accusation that PeopleSoft's refund program involved improper accounting. Conceptually, the rules are simple, said Gupta. It's OK for you to recognize a sale in case there is the possibility of a refund, as long as you estimate and recognize it as a deduction.

Spector Questions Toomey's Record
Frank Colon, professor of political science at Lehigh, commented on U.S. Senator Arlen Specter's Senate campaign's recent distribution of a memo among Republican officials in Pennsylvania questioning U.S. Rep. Pat Toomey's credentials as an anti-abortion candidate. It's pretty clear what (Toomey) is now, and I think he wants to make sure he's different than Specter, Colon said. The fundamental question for Pat Toomey supporters is: Are you sure you know what you're getting with Pat Toomey?

Social Security is Keystone to Mixed Retirement Plans
Eli Schwartz, professor emeritus of finance at Lehigh, wrote an Op-ed on the Social Security system. The cornerstone of the U.S. retirement program for lower income and lower middle income groups is Social Security, Schwartz wrote. The argument that Social Security doesn't provide as good a return as some other possible investments is misplaced.

Second-Half Effort Keys Lehigh Victory
Tuesday night, Lehigh basketball parlayed a strong second half into a 64-49 victory over visiting Stony Brook before a crowd of 468 at Stabler Arena. So does that make Lehigh 12 points better than Rick Majerus' unbeaten Utes? Of course not, but the Mountain Hawks aren't worried how they stack up with perennial Top 25 teams, though they'll get to test their skills against No. 1 Connecticut on Monday night in Hartford.
