Jermaine Pugh amassed 265 yards of total offense as Lehigh pulled away from visiting Lafayette in the fourth quarter. Pugh rushed for 68 yards, returned 6 punts for 100 yards and caught two passes for 87 yards.

Georgia's Savior Steps Off the Stage
Rajan Menon, professor of international relations at Lehigh, wrote an Op-ed concerning the situation in the country of Georgia. Georgia, a multiethnic land of 5 million people south of the Caucasus Mountains and between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea, faces a terrible storm, just as it did in 1992, wrote Menon. The man in the middle of the maelstrom is President Eduard A. Shevardnadze. He was hailed as a savior in 1992. Georgia was then an anarchy masquerading as a country, and most Georgians saw the silvered-haired Shevardnadze -- who gained fame as Mikhail S. Gorbachev's foreign minister and, before that, was chief of Georgia's Communist Party -- as their last hope.

The Mountain Hawks were unfortunately left out of the 2003 I-AA playoff bracket. The Brown and White (8-3) were bounced despite the fact that their three losses were all of a fine vintage, to Colgate (12-0), Penn (10-0), and I-A Connecticut (9-3). Pete Lembo’s team fulfilled the specific selection criteria by playing all Division I opponents, unlike at-larges such as Western Kentucky (8-3), Western Illinois (8-3), Southern Illinois (10-1) and Florida Atlantic (9-2). Lehigh’s power rating and strength of schedule was higher than that of at least one other non-automatic, Bethune- Cookman (9-2).

Mayor Gives 15 Extra Paychecks
Parveen Gupta, associate professor of accounting at Lehigh, commented on Bethlehem Mayor James Delgrosso's decision to give 15 salaried employees in Bethlehem an extra paycheck next year to account for a quirk in the calendar that happens every 11 years. The decision of adding a 27th paycheck does not sound like a good accounting practice, said Gupta. It's one thing if a contract calls for an hourly employee to be paid biweekly, but Gupta says he finds it hard to justify an extra paycheck for salaried employees. 'These guys are getting a 3.8 percent free raise across the board,'' he said.

Five years ago, Kim Edwards left banking to become director of the financing assistance program at Lehigh University's Small Business Development Center (SBDC). For his work, Edwards recently received a national award from an association that represents SBDCs nationwide. Edwards was the only SBDC representative from Pennsylvania and Lehigh's first winner.

Ben Franklin Will Lend $400,000 to Three Early-Stage Companies
A regional high-tech investment agency said Monday it would lend more than $400,000 to three early-stage local companies. The Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania will support the following companies, officials said: GlucoLight Corp., which is at the agency's business development incubator on the Lehigh University campus in Bethlehem.
