Gap Widens in Black, White Jobless Rate
Tom Hyclak, professor of economics and chair of the economics department at Lehigh, was quoted in an article on African Americans' difficult quest for employment. Although statistics show that the education level of African Americans is beginning to approach that of whites, there is still a significant skill differential that shows in the labor market as higher unemployment, said Hyclak.

Parveeen Gupta, associate professor of accounting, commented on the upcoming audit bill on Section 404 in an article on the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB)'s proposed standards. Gupta pointed out that auditors may insist on doing the extra work regardless of what the standard says. Whenever you ask a professional to give an opinion, I'm going to do a lot more work before I open my mouth, he said. The PCAOB standard is going to increase auditor liability, and whenever you increase liability, the fees go up and the [workload] goes up too.

Hattie Bryant, a perky 43-year-old from Southern California, held an audience of about 100 small-business owners rapt at Lehigh University's Iacocca Hall on Wednesday afternoon as she told them, if a company does not have a product consumers want, it should not be in business. Bryant has successfully been bringing her message to small businesses for the past 10 years through her public television show ''Small Business School.''

It's Time Lafayette Offered Athletic Scholarships
Lehigh was mentioned in an article on the lack of financial scholarships at Lafayette. The trustees of the other league schools, one by one, transferred the league decision on athletic aid to their own campuses, the article wrote. After Holy Cross, Lehigh committed. American was in, and Army and Navy were in by definition of their public support for all cadets.

New York Fusion Ensemble
Jazz fusion has been in limbo, almost since its heyday in the early 1970s and few musicians have re-examined the music in any serious way. Lehigh University's Bill Warfield, assistant professor of music, is an exception. Lehigh Wrestlers Top Two Ranked Foes
The Lehigh University wrestling team topped two nationally ranked opponents on Sunday in Ann Arbor, Mich. The Mountain Hawks edged No. 4 Michigan 18-12. It routed No. 15 Central Michigan 25-9 earlier in the day. Mario Stuart (125), Troy Letters (165), Brad Dillon (174), and Travis Frick (184) each won both of their respective matches on the day. Lehigh (1-1) will travel to Hawaii over Thanksgiving to face Oregon State in the Aloha Duals.

History Has No Clear Lesson for Occupation of Modern Iraq
Two Lehigh professors, Ian Duffy, professor of history and Ziad Munson, assistant professor of sociology, were quoted in an article comparing the British and French occupation of the Middle East following World War I to the occupation of modern Iraq. The British quelled the revolt by installing a puppet Iraqi king and using air power to bomb the daylights out of dissidents, Duffy said. The language of the two revolts is another major difference between the 1920 and 2003 uprisings--the language of the 1920 revolt was secular and nationalistic, while the language used to oppose Americans today is religious, said Munson.
