Urge to Merge. Again.
Samuel Weaver, associate professor of finance and law at Lehigh, was quoted in an article regarding the recent rash of acquisitions. “With Monday's purchase of Kraft Food's candy business by Wrigley, I would think (Switzerland's) Nestle would be very interested in making a run into the United States, and this makes things much more affordable for them,” said Weaver, who has expertise in the candy industry. Still, experts don't expect deals to approach the $1.7 trillion level seen in 2000 any time soon, even with improved activity. Weaver said rising interest rates and the run-up in stock prices and company valuations will limit some deals from getting done. “But all in all, when you consider pluses and minuses, I definitely believe acquisitions will be on the rise for the next few years.”

One of the events is the December 5th Lehigh University Choral Arts Christmas Vespers in Packer Chapel. The candlelight program includes “O So Joyful.” Also on December 11-12, “The Nutcracker” will be presented by the Pennsylvania Youth Ballet at Zoellner Arts Center.

Fry Quartet, Pianist Albulescu to Join Forces on Thursday
Eugene Albulescu, professor of practice of music at Lehigh, was mentioned in an article concerning his upcoming performance at this Thursday's Chamber Music Society of Salt Lake City at Libby Gardner Concert Hall at the University of Utah. It is like two concerts in one, with the Fry Street Quartet and pianist Albulescu performing separately and together. Albulescu said he is fascinated by the history of the piece, which “supposedly had its first incarnation as a string sextet,” then was rearranged as a sonata for two pianos. “At times it's very blended; other times it's slightly more adversarial,” Albulescu said.

Lehigh was mentioned in an article on the earthquake simulators that are part of the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) sponsored by the National Science Foundation. Universities across the country, including Lehigh, have simulators that are part of the NEES. “Next week, for example, researchers at the University at Illinois will test stresses on a set of bridge piers. Those calculations will be relayed immediately to Troy, where the bridge's foundation will be tested in the centrifuge. And Lehigh University will test the bridge deck,” the article said.

'Must-wear' student IDs roil a town
Perry Zirkel, professor of educational leadership at Lehigh, was quoted in an article on a school in Missouri that has required students to wear ID badges on school grounds. Like it or not, parents and students face an uphill battle if they want to reverse this new rule, says Zirkel. I see this as another one of the many issues where the courts increasingly give school authorities broad boundaries, and it's more a matter of does this seem to be a sensible action. I really don't think when you clear the smoke away that there's any kind of viable legal claim. Experts may not agree that this is the proper use of educational resources, but it's certainly not invasive in the scheme of things.

Democrats Failed to Portray All Politics as Moral…
Ziad W. Munson, assistant professor of sociology at Lehigh, wrote an op-ed on the aftermath of the 2004 presidential election. “The media pundits are in high gear spinning President George W. Bush's victory as the result of concern over ‘moral values,’ Munson wrote. “They base this conclusion on election day exit polls in which voters cited moral values more than any other issue in influencing their vote. The Democrats, we are told, lost because they don't understand the importance to the average American voter of issues such as gay marriage, abortion and stem cell research. The focus on ‘moral issues’ ultimately hurts all American citizens regardless of their party affiliation. It suggests that we are more divided than we really are about values of honesty, security, justice, and human rights. It misrepresents what people care most about in their lives and in the life of the country. Most importantly, it detracts attention from the moral dimension of the many different problems and opportunities we face in the coming years.”

Outside Groups Offer Help – And a Chance to Give Back
The Small Business Development Center (SBDC) located at Lehigh was mentioned in an article about Tina Hamilton’s opening of InterSource Inc., a hiring management firm for small businesses. “I knew of the SBDC through their presentations at the Small Business Council of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce breakfast meetings,” she said.
