Studies in Suspense Flourish in New York
Lehigh University is testing a new technique for assessing the residual strength in cable wires by evaluating the shapes of the cracks in cables of the Mid-Hudson Suspension Bridge in Highland, New York at Lehigh University. The aim is to enhance (previous studies) with better models to describe wire behavior and see if variability can be minimized, says John Fisher Lehigh civil engineering professor emeritus.

Lehigh Wrestlers Set to Open New Digs
Lehigh University officially unveils the newly-renovated Leeman-Turner Arena at Grace Hall tonight. And what better way to celebrate than by inviting a charter member of collegiate wrestling royalty to the party, Iowa State. When it came down to scheduling an opponent to open the new Grace Hall, Iowa State was my first choice, Lehigh coach Greg Strobel said. Bobby Douglas and I go back a long way and the long-time rivalry that existed between schools would be one to tap into.

Tai Chi
Norm Girardot, professor of religion studies at Lehigh, was quoted in an article on tai chi. American culture has become more health conscious and our body awareness has been heightened, says Girardot. In short, we've come to realize the mind is in a body and there is a relationship. And when you think about a human culture that has traditionally been concerned with these issues, it's been Taoism. Taoism closely links good health with religion, Girardot says. That idea is beginning to resonate with more Westerners.

Tours Used to Court Foreign Firms
Twenty-seven foreign representatives from 15 international offices visited Berks County and Lehigh Valley earlier this month. The group's Lehigh Valley visit was organized by Lehigh University's Lehigh Expert Network (LEX). Cora Landis, marketing director for LEX and program coordinator for Lehigh's Small Business Development Center, said that while the foreign representatives were here, she handled the trade side of the tour and introduced them to 24 Lehigh Valley-based companies that were interested in working with them.

Racetrack Writer Enters the Winner's Circle
Ask Russ Harris, horse race writer, which of his personal achievements he's most proud of and he's likely to name his minor-league baseball pitching career in Akron; winning three Bronze Stars during World War II; meeting legendary sportswriter and broadcaster Red Smith; his ping-pong skills; or receiving his doctorate in history from Lehigh University when he was 75. Fifty years later Harris is the recipient of the 2003 Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Turf Writers Association.
