Robert Thorton's Book Gains Significant Media Attention
Letters of recommendation are becoming increasingly unreliable as a means of evaluating candidates under consideration for employment. Robert Thornton, professor of economics at Lehigh, designed the Lexicon of Intentionally Ambiguous Recommendations (LIAR) (Sourcebooks), to provide a way for letter writers to convey unfavorable information in a way that the candidate cannot perceive it or prove it as such. For example, to describe an ex-employee who had difficulty getting along with fellow workers, Thornton suggests saying, I am pleased to say that this candidate is a former colleague of mine. His humorous approach has caught the attention of several prominent media outlets including:

In Northampton, 34 Become U.S. Citizens
Rev. Lloyd Steffen, professor and chaplain at Lehigh, spoke at a naturalization ceremony at the Northampton County Courthouse yesterday to welcome 34 people representing 20 countries as American citizens. Steffen told the new citizens to hold the date of their citizenship in as high a regard as family birthdays and wedding anniversaries.
It's that important, he said.

Veterans of D-Day Awarded
During a ceremony to honor local veterans, Lt. Col. William Kuchinski, a professor of military science at Lehigh, presented a Jubilee of Liberty medal to Robert L. MacHose, 79, of Zionsville. MacHose stood at attention as the medal was pinned on his chest by Kuchinski.

Specter Hits Toomey's Stance on Abortion
Frank Colon, professor of political science at Lehigh, was quoted in an article on U.S. Senator Arlen Spector's questioning of U.S. Representative Pat Toomey's credentials as an anti-abortion advocate. Colon said Specter's camp is wrong to attack Toomey's abortion stance. I think he (Toomey) is viewed as a pro-life candidate, Colon said. It's pretty clear what he is now, and I think he wants to make sure he's different than Specter.

Veterans Saddened by Military Interest
Ted Zagraniski, Army ROTC cadet in the Department of Military Science and Leadership based at Lehigh, was quoted in a Veterans' Day story on students who see the need to serve their country. Military service members are not afraid to serve their country, not afraid to do whatever we have to do to make sure everyone else in this country is safe, he said. That's why we wear these funny-looking green suits.

Lehigh alumnus David Parke, who graduated summa cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa with a BS in finance, has been appointed by the Board of Directors of Petroleum Development Corporation to fill the position vacated by Dale G. Rettinger, who passed away unexpectedly in October.
