The Lehigh University Institute for Metal Forming (IMF) has developed a K-12 outreach program that disseminates materials engineering into local schools through demonstrations, web sites, lesson plans, and sending engineering students to teach in local schools.

Research led by Himanshu Jain, Diamond professor and chair of materials science and engineering at Lehigh that uncovers the mystery of cloudy wine glasses, continues to gain media focus. The problem, say materials scientists at Lehigh University, has nothing to do with your dishwasher or your standards of cleanliness. And while the type of detergent you use may aggravate the dirty appearance, forces of fundamental science are more to blame.

Lehigh University is the center of curators Peggy Hobbs and Dzintra Kalnins' partnership and friendship. For a good 14 years Hobbs and Kalnins have been the Lehigh Valley's only independent, regular co-curators. The duo's current show expands the notion of knitting. The glass cases in Lehigh University's DuBois Gallery contain Blanka Sperkova's sculptural jewelry of finger-woven wire.

The choir of Lehigh University performed twice last weekend at Zoellner Arts Center under the baton of Steven Sametz in a diverse program of music from Bach to Leonard Bernstein. Friday evening's performance opened with one of Bach's numerous cantatas (''Nach dir, Herr, verlanget mich'').

Web Site that Detects Plagiarism has Supporters, Foes

A Web site devised to combat plagiarism on college campuses could revolutionize the way professors grade papers and, some say, radically change the relationship between students and faculty. The site, Turnitin.com, has attracted a following of academic heavyweights that includes Lehigh, Dartmouth, and Georgetown universities. ''This is a bad precedent to set. It creates a communal bin of suspicion,'' said Lehigh University adjunct English lecturer Stephan Tompkins, adding that the school has an honor code and plagiarism policies in place.

Colleges Consider Options to Limit Music Downloading

Colleges in the Lehigh Valley are taking measures to prevent student from downloading music online. At Lehigh University, students who exceed bandwidth allocation within 24 hours -- a sign that they are stockpiling songs -- risk losing full access to some sites, college spokesman Andrew Stanten said. The message gets through loud and clear, he said.
