When He Was Puerto Rican
Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about an art exhibit that was on view at Lehigh in 2002 entitled Blueprints. In Blueprints, the artist presents as evidence his experience growing up jibaro (a country bumpkin) in Puerto Rico’s mountainous interior. But the bulk of the show, and what Maldonado is really interested in, is the depiction of blurriness – of Puerto Ricans like himself who live in the U.S. and feel like a fish out of water.

Under a $100,000 grant, Lehigh University's Small Business Development center taught 12 residents how to start their own businesses during two five-week courses. The state awarded $175,000 to the West Ward at Work program to indirectly improve the West Ward by empowering its residents.

Kurt Vonnegut to Speak at Lehigh Commencement
Kurt Vonnegut, the author who gained worldwide fame in the 1960s by combining science fiction, social satire, and dark comedy into satirical novels such as “Slaughterhouse Five,” will address the 1,200 graduates of Lehigh University's Class of 2004 at the 136th commencement ceremony May 24. During the 10 a.m. ceremony at Lehigh's Goodman Stadium, Vonnegut will receive an Honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree.

Eagles Set Camp Dates at Lehigh
The Eagles announced Tuesday that training camp at Lehigh University will begin July 28 with a practice for rookies and selected veterans. The remaining veterans will report July 30, with the first full-squad practice scheduled for the following day. Double sessions begin Aug. 1, and camp will break Aug. 12, one day before the Eagles open the preseason with a game against the New England Patriots in Foxboro, Mass. The exact times of the practices will be announced at a later date.

Catch Alps-Like Grandeur of Switzerland’s Oldest Orchestra
Switzerland's oldest orchestral group, an ensemble that Brahms himself conducted several years before his death, will perform Sunday at Zoellner Arts Center. Tonhalle Orchestra Zurich is led by distinguished American conductor David Zinman.
Zoellner will also be busy Friday night when the new Trio Lipatti takes center stage. Romanian-born pianist Eugene Albulescu, who teaches piano at Lehigh, will be joined by fellow countrymen violinist Gabriel Croitoru and cellist Ovidiu Marinescu in a program that includes Beethoven' famous “Ghost” trio (Op. 70, No, 1) and Mendelssohn's Trio in C Minor, Op. 66. The evening will open with Dinu Lipatti's “Fantaisie for violin, cello and piano.” Lipatti was one of Romania's best-known pianists. He died prematurely when he was 33, leaving behind great recordings of such famed concerti as Grieg's and Schumann's.
One annual highlight is, of course, the performance of Bach's monumental Mass in B Minor. This year's performances are Saturday and May 15 in the usual venue — Packer Memorial Church on the campus of Lehigh University. Part I is at 2:15 p.m. and Part II is at 4:30 p.m.
On Friday and May 14, at 4 and 8:30 p.m., the Bach Choir will present a program of cantatas and motets in Packer Memorial Church. A lecture on the spiritual world of Bach's cantatas will be delivered by Swarthmore professor Michael Marissen on Friday and May 14 at 2 p.m.
