In Male Monkeys, Too Much Soy Has Adverse Effects
Researchers from Lehigh University’s Department of Biological Sciences joined researchers from Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in a study that suggested that while soy may be beneficial to women in a variety of ways, it could have an adverse effect on the behavior of men. Reporting in the current issue of the scientific journal Hormones and Behavior, the researchers found that in male monkeys, long-term consumption of a diet rich in soy isoflavones can have marked influences on patterns of aggression and social behavior. Isoflavones are a naturally occurring plant estrogen in soy protein.

Lehigh's Manufacture Expo 2004's matchbox racecar extravaganza took place Friday outside Packard Lab. The Expo was part of an annual project between the university's mechanical engineering department and Broughal Middle School. Twenty-nine teams of Lehigh juniors and seniors and Broughal eighth-graders designed and built cars similar to Matchboxes and Hot Wheels. Team Nizmo beat the Attack Pack in the final race.

Talian, who earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Lehigh University, has been named 2004 Engineer of the Year by the American Society of Civil Engineers' Central Pennsylvania Section and by the Central Pennsylvania Engineers Week Council. A 37-year veteran with Gannett Fleming, an international planning, design and construction management firm, Talian serves as a senior vice president with the company.

Ben Franklin Technology Partners of Northeastern Pennsylvania won two honors in The Communicator Awards 2004 Media Competition. The public-private economic development organization won awards of distinction for its 24-page 2003 annual report and its video, ''Reflections on Innovation.'' The Communicator Awards is a competition that recognizes advertising companies, public relations firms, corporate communications departments and other entities for written and visual communications. Ben Franklin provides assistance and loans to startup and current companies. Its northeastern branch is at Lehigh University, where it operates a business incubator.
