Kurds Want a Top Post in Iraq; Leaders Threaten Boycott of Planned Interim Government
Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about the situation in Iraq. According to Kurdish and U.S. sources, Iraq’s Kurdish leaders are telling a top U.S. envoy that they want one of the two top positions in the new interim government – president or prime minister – or they will not participate in the body that is scheduled to take over when the U.S. hands over limited authority on June 30. They don't want to be a token, Barkey says. There's no question that Barzani and Talabani are bargaining.
