The Staffing Solution

Research by Nandkumar Nayar, professor of finance and law at Lehigh, was mentioned in a recent article in Office Solutions. The article discussed the recent increase in temporary jobs across the country. In their study, Nayar and G. Lee Willinger of the University of Oklahoma compared firms in a carefully constructed sample and found that earnings (before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization), gross margins, and stock returns improved after the increased use of contingent labor.

Religious Items in School

Perry Zirkel, professor in the College of Education at Lehigh, wrote an article reviewing a case where at a seasonal party prior to Easter, a prekindergarten child brought and distributed pencils with the imprint, “Jesus Loves the Little Children.” Noticing the imprint, the teacher stopped the distribution and contacted the principal, who consulted with the superintendent. They determined that the young children and their parents might perceive an endorsement of religion if they allowed the distribution of the pencils, and six months later, the school board adopted a written policy prohibiting promotion of beliefs at district-sponsored programs. “Unlike the Ten Commandments, the rules are not etched in “Stone,” wrote Zirkel. “Well-intended projects such as Tiles for Smiles, if not carefully circumscribed, may end up opening the school to piles of court files.”

The Evolution Backlash: Debunking Darwin

Michael Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, was once again mentioned in an article on the debate surrounding the teaching of evolution. “The design movement offers more than new and improved critiques of evolutionary theory,” the article said. “Its goal is to show that intelligent design also functions as a positive research program. That task has been taken up by Michael Behe of Lehigh University. In ‘Darwin's Black Box: The Biochemical Challenge to Evolution,’ Behe introduces the concept of ‘irreducible complexity.’ At the bedrock of life, in the microscopic world of the cell, we find molecular machines consisting of interrelated parts, all of which are necessary for the machines to work. Such structures cannot have emerged gradually by any conceivable Darwinian process….Behe’s favorite example of irreducible complexity is a mousetrap: You can't take part of a mousetrap--say, the wooden base--and catch a few mice, then add a spring and catch a few more, and so on. You need the complete contraption from the start to catch even one mouse.”
