Extremism of All Sorts Can Spawn Terrorism

John Karakash, dean emeritus of engineering at Lehigh University, wrote an Op Ed on how extremism can spawn terrorism. He said all forms of extremism blind and distort. Political extremists in Washington deflected the public's anger from Osama bin Laden to Saddam Hussein by distorting reality and hinting that he had played a role in Sept. 11. Religious extremism, which marred Christianity with the invention of the rack and the stake, is now history. But it continues to mar Islam in several lands, feeding terrorism, now mostly anti-Americanism…We can kill terrorists if we see them, but we can do little to dry up the widely distributed sources that produce them, which include schools. To prevail over terrorism we have to learn how to dry up its sources. We cannot win this war alone.

Advocate for Women's Business Honored for Her Efforts

Sally Handlon, program director for business education and training at Lehigh's Small Business Development Center (SBDC), was recently awarded the 2004 Eastern Pennsylvania Women in Business Advocate of the Year award. There are many, many women who qualify for this honor, Handlon says. When you receive an honor like this, it is hard to accept that there aren't others more deserving. The award is given by the U.S. Small Business Administration's Philadelphia District Office to honor an individual who has fulfilled a commitment to the advancement of women's business ownership.
