U.S. Tries To Adapt as Options Dwindle
Henri Barkey, chair of the international relations department at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about the Iraqi government. With a new Iraqi government due in less than seven weeks, U.S. officials have been trying to build a future for the country on lofty concepts of constitutional democracy. In real time, though, a different principle increasingly guides the U.S. mission: Go with what works. If you don't want the Kurds messing things up for you, you want to have them in the tent, said Barkey, also a former State Department official and an expert on the region.

School suits: Educators face a variety of legal claims, spurious or not.
Perry Zirkel, professor of education and law, College of Education, provided opinion and commentary in the lead article appearing in the May 17 issue of National Law Journal, in both the print and online version. Education law expert Perry Zirkel, a professor at Lehigh University in Bethlehem, Pa., who has tracked school lawsuits from the 1940s, said the belief that schools are under attack from the courts is false, the article said. There's a myth that education litigation has exploded in terms of frequency and volume, and that the pendulum in terms of who's winning is in favor of the people suing the school districts, he said. Zirkel, who conducted a random sample of school lawsuits filed from the 1940s through 2000, said the number of cases peaked in the 1970s, but dropped at a consistent rate since then (though he did not have total figures available). He also found in reviewing cases over the same time period that the courts consistently sided with schools.

John Baer / Rummy’s Not Into Print and Outta The Loop
Jack Lule was also quoted in an article about Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, saying he no longer reads newspapers. Even if you don't accept newspapers as arbiters of information, they remain arbiters of public opinion and as such are still important, Lule said. Newspapers, for all their faults, reflect the tastes, culture and views of America. The many voices in editorials, letters, opinion pieces and news reports contribute to shaping the direction of the country and a government of, by and for the people.
