Reframed Arguments Rekindle Darwin Debate
Michael Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, was mentioned in numerous articles about intelligent design (ID). “ID movement icons such as Behe argue the Earth must have been created through guided, intelligent events, because everything in the universe is just too complicated to have been created through random chance,” the article said.

Day 3 of Evolution Trial Sees Lawyers Wrangle
Michael Behe was also quoted in an article echoing the famed Monkey Trial of 80 years ago. Three days of public hearings about evolution culminated Saturday in sparring between opposing attorneys. A State Board of Education subcommittee took testimony from critics of evolution who hope students are exposed to more criticism of the theory. The entire board expects to consider changes this summer in standards that determine how students are tested on science statewide. Witnesses warned against defining science as the search for only natural explanations, saying it would stifle inquiry into whether design exists in nature. The cell, the basis of life, is composed of machines -- literally machines, Behe told the subcommittee.

With Weld Safety Confirmed, Bay Bridge Work Resuming
John Fisher, professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering at Lehigh, was mentioned in an article about the Bay Bridge. Now that suspect welds have been sliced up, tested and given a federal seal of approval, state transportation officials are struggling to get the new Bay Bridge back on track. Time is of the essence on California's largest-ever seismic safety project, especially because the $6.2 billion span is years behind schedule, billions over budget and mired in debate about whether to switch designs midconstruction. The report goes beyond a simple review of welds, however. In a key portion that examines construction processes, Fisher said quality control practices on the job site exceed requirements in most states.
