Muriel Mallin Berman, a Pennsylvania arts patron and philanthropist, died on April 13 at her home in Allentown, Pa. Along with her husband, they established the Philip and Muriel Berman Center for Jewish Studies at Lehigh University and the Center for Biblical Archaeology at Hebrew University. Paintings from their personal collection toured the world via the Art in the U.S Embassies Program.

Overtime Overhaul Effects Vary
Tom Hyclack, professor of economics at Lehigh, was interviewed for a story on overtime pay. Last month the Bush administration completed a historic and radical restructuring of the rules governing overtime pay. “Instead of hiring as output orders increase, companies are relying on overtime pay, which is part of the deal with the jobless recovery,” said Hyclak. The new rules could speed this trend in the future, he said. “More people could be expected to work more than 40-hour weeks.

Study Reveals Serpents’ Secrets
David Cundall, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, was mentioned in another article about the state Bureau of Forestry being in the midst of a three-year study of the lives of rattlesnakes. About 30 snakes have been implanted with radio transmitters and identification tags have been attached to the tails of another 100 in the Black Forest area of northwestern Lycoming County. Cundall began seriously studying rattlesnakes in Pennsylvania in 1977 and co-developed a method for implanting radio transmitters in snakes that is used all over the world.

Fitness Facility Craze has Universities Spending Millions
Lehigh's climbing wall was mentioned in an article on the recent fitness facility frenzy that has developed on American campuses in an outright bid to attract students. Lehigh built the climbing wall and renovated a weight training facility for the college's varsity teams in 2002. Lehigh's is the latest in a string of new, multimillion-dollar, state of-the-art college gyms in the Lehigh Valley. Like residence and dining halls, recreational centers can sway a prospective student's decision whether to enroll, college admissions officers say.

Math Talent Adds Up to Give Student a Shot at Olympic Glory
Ameya Velingker's parents knew he had a head for math when their boy began multiplying numbers — at 4 years old. Lehigh University math professor Don Davis knew Velingker was special when Velingker qualified for a national high school math competition as an eighth-grader. Only nine Pennsylvania students made the cut; Velingker was the sole middle-schooler. The Parkland High School sophomore is one of 12 finalists for the team the United States will send to the International Mathematics Olympiad, a math competition for high school-age students.
