Dr. Love Is In
Robert E. Rosenwein, a professor of sociology at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about singles joining dating sites that match them by psychological compatibility. He said that as long as the studies have been shown to have good validity — which in psychological terms means they predict at about a rate of about 50 percent or higher — they can be good indicators of success. But the true test of longevity can't be measured yet because the phenomenon is still fairly new. I don't think there's any reason to think that the more complex inventory is going to be more predictive of success than something that's more quote superficial … the literature all shows the best predictors are similarity in places of interests and values, Rosenwein said. If that's what you're measuring, you can make matches and probably predict fairly successfully.

Lehigh Volunteers are Wonderful
Karen Schocko, a Bangor area mom, wrote a letter to thank the Lehigh students who chose to do community service instead of working on their tans over spring break. I have a child who is terminally ill, she wrote. Last week the Make a Wish Foundation sent us to Florida. Much to our surprise, we met an awesome crew of kids from Lehigh and they were a special bunch. Not many kids their age would give up partying to help our families wit hour sick children. I want them to know how much they touched our lives, and I thank them for having such big hearts.

Talk Focuses on Culture
A panel discussion Monday at Lafayette College failed to answer yes or no to the question of American Culture in the World: Benevolent Force or Evil Empire? but it generated some interesting discussions. Panel member Amardeep Singh, assistant professor of English at Lehigh, said a McDonald's restaurant means little more to people in India than another eatery choice. That's because the fast-food chain tailors its menu to carry Indian ingredients, meaning no beef. And the Indians, he said, are happy they have access to (McDonalds), if they want it. American culture can improve lives when it spreads to foreign nations.

Industrial Museum Far from Opening
In 1997, the head of Bethlehem Steel stood shoulder to shoulder with then-Gov. Tom Ridge to announce an ambitious plan to transform part of the shuttered Steel plant into a $250 million national monument to industrial America. Today, the museum is yet to be built. Museum board member and Lehigh University President Gregory Farrington is confident the museum will indeed be built some time in the future. When museum contributions began to dwindle, he told Museum President Steve Donches to change focus: ''I'm all about focusing on the achievable dream,'' Farrington said. ''Achieve that goal first before you set your next goal.''

Our Town is Not Just Your Town
Jake Miller, a Bloomsburg University columnist, praised Bethlehem as a college town in a recent column. Bethlehem has become quite a complexity in the greater Allentown area, with a great small town atmosphere in a city that is almost six times larger than Bloomsburg, he wrote. The city has learned to work with Moravian and Lehigh and has become proud of the students enrolled in the universities. The downtown atmosphere, bordered by both schools, has remained intact and has just recently been refurbished.
