Prosecutor: Baby Sitter Took Child to Conceal Miscarriage
Judith Lasker, professor of sociology and anthropology at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about a babysitter who prosecutors said took off with the infant in her care after she had a miscarriage. Lasker, who has written extensively about failed pregnancies, said there are an estimated 700,000 miscarriages each year in the United States. Successful births number about 4 million annually. While unfamiliar with Martinez's circumstances, Lasker said it would be wrong to assume that all women who miscarry are mentally unstable or prone to kidnapping. Motherhood can confer status within relationships and community, Lasker said. While the platitude, “You’ll have another baby,” is cold comfort to most, older women such as Martinez would not even have that. “At 52, her options are limited,” Lasker said. “People can't say, ‘Oh you’re young; you’ll try again.’”

PA College to Analyze Debris of Columbia
Professor of materials science and engineering Arnold Marder and his failure analysis class’s investigation of debris from the space shuttle Challenger was covered in the Sunday edition of the Detroit News. Two years after the space shuttle Columbia broke up over Texas and killed seven astronauts, Lehigh students are getting a rare look at these unexamined parts -- and NASA hopes their findings might contribute to the design of the next generation of space vehicles. Seniors are looking at each part under powerful electron and light microscopes, trying to determine when and why the part stopped working and how it reacted under the extreme forces to which it was subjected. Microscopy will reveal the “telltale signs of the mode of failure,” said Marder, who served as a consultant at Kennedy Space Center last spring.

An Evolving Argument
Michael Behe, professor of biological sciences at Lehigh, was quoted in an article regarding intelligent design. Behe is a strong supporter of intelligent design. In 1996, he published “Darwin’s Black Box,” a book which challenges the science behind evolution. Behe said he would like to see intelligent design presented in science classrooms along with a variety of other theories about the origins of life. “It would be more honest,” Behe said. “Scientists don’t want to consider this theory because of what it might imply—specifically, a designer.” Behe was also quoted in an article regarding a recent national survey in which nearly one-third of science teachers who participated said they feel pressured to include creationism-related ideas in the classroom.

Urban Planners Say Pairing Living and Retail Space Makes Good Sense
Sally Handlon, program director of the Small Business Development Center at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about mixed-use buildings. Many cities and downtowns across America were built by shopkeepers who lived above their stores. Handlon says: “I think we’re going to see more of that as we’re going back to the urban center.” A number of renovation projects are under way in Allentown, Bethlehem and Easton that involve mixed-use buildings, where the bottom floors are restaurants or store fronts and the top floors will be single-family residences, apartments or condominiums.

Jack Lief, who received a masters degree in psychology (experimental and neurobiology) from Lehigh, has been appointed Chairman of the Board for BIOCOM. BIOCOM is a premiere life science industry association representing more than 450 member companies in San Diego and Southern California. The association focuses on initiatives that positively influence the growth of the life science industry, including capital formation, public policy, workforce development, and scientific discovery and development.
