National Academy of Engineering Announces New Members
Shivaji Sircar, professor of practice in the chemical engineering department at Lehigh University, recently received one of the highest honors accorded to engineers in the United States. Sircar was named a new member in the National Academy of Engineering for his contributions to the fundamental science and technology of adsorption separations and their applications in process industries.

Mary Beth Deily, associate professor of economics at Lehigh, continues to generate visibility for the College of Business and Economics and Lehigh with her expert commentary about International Steel Group (ISG). Deily, who studies the steel industry, said ISG has succeeded at ''dealing with the union and getting everybody on board and moving ahead and getting the workers to kind of buy into what sacrifices they have to make to keep this capacity running.

Lehigh Part of Consortium to Create Systems Predicting Structural Failures
Lehigh University was mentioned as being part of a consortium to create systems that predict structural failures in aircraft and other forms of transportation. The U.S. Department of Defense (DOD) has asked scientists to develop a system that could predict when it's time to take an aircraft, vehicle or piece of machinery out of service. More important perhaps, the new technology, called the Structural Integrity Prognosis System, or SIPS, could allow expensive equipment to stay in useful service past its predicted lifetime.

Palisades Students to Hold Patriot Act Forum Tonight
Lehigh University general counsel Frank Roth will participate in a forum arranged by the Students for Social Change Club at Palisades High School in Nockamixon Township to discuss the controversial USA Patriot Act. The ''Patriot Act Forum'' will be held at 7 tonight in the Palisades Middle School auditorium. Lehigh University professor Brian Pinaire will moderate the debate.

Letters Wins NCAA Title; Olympic Trials Berth
It was quite a weekend for Troy Letters, his Lehigh University teammates, and wrestling coach Greg Strobel, at the NCAA Division I championships. Letters, a sophomore, claimed his first NCAA title, while four other teammates earned All-American honors. Letters was quick to point out Coach Strobel was named [National Wrestling Coaches Association] coach of the year. By advancing to the NCAA final, Letters earns an automatic berth to the Olympic trials in July. There are the best wrestlers in the country at the Olympic trials, said Letters, who said it would be a long shot for him to earn an Olympic berth. I'm going for the experience, and also want to see [Lehigh assistant coach] Kerry McCoy wrestle. I'm looking forward to it.

Austen Rowland of Lehigh University earned honorable mention status when the Associated Press named two former Prince George’s County basketball standouts among its honorable mention All-Americans on Tuesday. Rowland, a Hyattsville resident, earned the Patriot League Player of the Year award this winter.
