Economic Activity Returning to Baghdad, But Messy Start to Democracy
Henri Barkey, chairman of Lehigh University's International Relations department, commented on democracy and economic activity in Baghdad. What's impressive -- and maybe more credit goes to Iraqis than to us -- is that economic activity has picked up. Clearly, there's money out there. People are going to jobs and working, he said. But Iraqi democracy has proved messy in the making. The Pentagon abruptly jettisoned the State Department's plans for assembling a post-Hussein government and started from scratch -- a move from which analysts believe the United States has not recovered. Because we didn't have anything concrete to put in place the day after, it left a vacuum, Barkey said.

Analysis Continues of Crane Accident
John Fisher, professor emeritus of civil engineering, was mentioned in an article about an analysis showing cracks found in the steel from a bridge that collapsed over a Toldeo interstate didn't cause the accident. He says that doesn't mean the steel has been ruled out entirely. Fisher says investigators still are studying another section of steel that helped move equipment from one pier to another. Steel from the February 16 collapse was sent to Lehigh for analysis. Fisher says it was quickly apparent that cracks found in some sections were caused by the collapse. The engineers will continue to search for other causes.

WAEB (Lehigh Valley talk radio)
Sharon Friedman, professor of journalism and communication at Lehigh University, was interviewed on WAEB discussing the 25th anniversary of partial meltdown at Three Mile Island. She said “We’re probably no better prepared to discuss public risks than we were 25 years ago.” Friedman was a member of the Public's Right to Information Task Force of the President's Commission on the Accident at Three Mile Island.

Officials are Grappling with Wrestling Cuts at College Level
Each of the country's 10 top-ranked freestyle wrestlers has a connection to a college program. For example, Kerry McCoy, a 2000 Olympian and still the top-ranked heavyweight, entered the coaching ranks immediately after he graduated from Penn State in 1997. He stayed at his alma mater for a time, and he's now an assistant coach at Lehigh. I don't even think the USOC resident program existed until a year or two after I graduated, McCoy said. I can't imagine what I would have done without the opportunity to stay and coach.

Lehigh Advances Four to Quarters
Mario Stuart is halfway there. So are three of his Lehigh University teammates.
Stuart, an All-American wrestler in his freshman season of 2001, proceeded to all but disappear from the national scene over the next two seasons. He never went away, though. Thursday, he resurfaced in dramatic fashion at the NCAA Championships, winning his first two bouts at 125 pounds to reach the quarterfinals at the Savvis Center.
