Inquiry Examines Failure of Steel
Lehigh's Advanced Technology for Large Structural Systems lab (ATLSS), which specializes in testing the integrity of steel structures, was the focus of a recent article on the Associated Press. Jule Jones, head of the Toledo office of the U.S. Occupational Safety and Health Administration, said yesterday that investigators sent fairly large pieces of fractured steel to ATLSS. Investigators are focusing on failed steel as a possible cause for the deadly I-280 truss crane collapse last month. ATLSS has done extensive work on the strength and failure of construction materials and has investigated many notable structural failures, including the collapse of the World Trade Center. Studying the fractures under a microscope and subjecting portions of the samples to standard steel stress tests, the lab will try to determine if the steel failed - and therefore, caused the accident - or if it may have fractured when it collapsed as a result of some other cause.

The Alert Traveler; Spring Break Turns Girls Gone Mild
Recent Lehigh University grad Kimberly Pinkos of Norwell spent her most recent spring break helping build a fence at a state park in Virginia Beach. We all drove down together in a big van and stayed in a cabin, worked from about 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. for four days, then explored the area when we weren't working, Pinkos said. Food and spending money were supplied by her school from a fund financed through donations and fund raising. Though working all day couldn't be described as a day at the beach, the experience was rewarding and only cost each student about $ 100, Pinkos said.

Mary Beth Deily, associate professor of economics at Lehigh University, was quoted in an article about International Steel Group. According to Deily, ISG has succeeded at dealing with the union, getting everybody on board and moving ahead and getting the workers to kind of buy into what sacrifices they have to make to keep this capacity running.

This display will be presented at The Tech Museum of Innovation in San Jose, California, which hosts the National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance's (NCIIA) Eight Annual March Madness for the Mind on Saturday, March 20.

Hans Blix to Speak at Lehigh University
Hans Blix, the former head of the U.N. weapons inspection team charged with finding weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, will speak at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Lehigh University about the process he now criticizes. The talk will be given in Baker Hall of the Zoellner Arts Center. Blix gained international recognition last year when he and his team tried to find out if Saddam Hussein was hiding weapons of mass destruction.
