Colleges Seek Gold in Alumni Data

Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about college researchers whose goal is to find out how much money you have to give your alma mater and what might persuade you to fork it over. Lehigh, which has two full-time researchers and two part-timers, has more data diggers than any other area college. The researchers' job is to find and collect information on potential college donors. Fund-raisers, who work with researchers in college development offices, use that data to cultivate relationships with possible donors and solicit contributions.

Memorial Held for D-Day Soldier

Reverend Wayne Killian, Catholic chaplain at Lehigh, was quoted in an article on the memorial held for D-Day soldier Sgt. Walter Geldon, who died on June 6, 1944. Walter was suddenly and violently taken from us, said Killian, who officiated graveside. He gave his life for freedom and democracy.

Getting Things in Tune

Ricky Kirshner, who graduated with a degree in accounting from Lehigh, was the focus of a recent article on the Tony Awards production and telecast. Kirshner was one of the producers of the Tonys show at Radio City Music hall in 1997. He now runs Firebird Productions, which specializes in concerts of Russian music and dance and serves as co-executive producer of the Tony Awards.

Saudi Energy Minister Ali al-Naimi, who attended Lehigh, continues to show that he can handle the pressure as oil prices threaten the global economic recovery. This week, al-Naimi is feeling the glare of the spotlight more than any other time in a 56-year career begun at age 12 in an oil company office.

A Quiet and Heroic Couple Revisits Wartime Memories

Fletcher Hanks Jr., who graduated from Lehigh in 1941, was the topic of an article on his attendance at the Museum of Flight's new Personal Courage Wing. Also in attendance was his wife, Emma Jane Foster-Petach. Neither member of the Maryland couple had been fighter pilots, but their quiet presence spoke volumes of the museum's new addition.
