Safety Ratings Fall on Aging Tappan Zee Bridge
John Fisher, professor emeritus of civil and environmental engineering at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about safety ratings for the Tappan Zee Bridge, which have dropped back to some of the lowest levels in a decade despite an infusion of at least $316 million according to a computer analysis of government records by The Journal News. The bridge's open drainage, which deposits water, road salt and debris from the roadway directly onto the structure below, is the main reason for corrosion of the steel, said Fisher, who inspected parts of the bridge in 2003. “Prior to the time it was built, I don't think de-icing salts were used anywhere near like they are today,” Fisher said. “So some of this is just the way things have changed with time and the experience of today versus what was the experience 50 years ago.”
