Career Center Offering Master’s Degrees
Through a new distance-education partnership, area students can now earn master’s degrees from Lehigh by taking classes at the Franklin County Career and Technology Center in Chambersburg. Students can take day and evening classes in business administration, chemistry, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, molecular biology, quality engineering, pharmaceutical chemistry, and polymer science and engineering.

Valley Chamber Chairman Resigns to Accept Post at Lehigh University
Dale Kochard, who led the Bethlehem Area Chamber of Commerce through a landmark merger, will resign as executive vice president of the Greater Lehigh Valley Chamber of Commerce at the end of the month to take a job as Lehigh’s executive director for regional and community affairs, replacing former Mayor Ken Smith on July 1. Kochard will be responsible for developing community relations, representing the university at regional events, and managing partnerships with the city to stimulate economic revitalization of the South Side.

Bethlehem First Valley City to Oppose Patriot Act?
While Bethlehem could become the first city in the region to oppose the Patriot Act, it would not be the first local institution. The faculty of Muhlenberg College and at Lehigh have passed similar resolutions. While the act’s proponents denounce such charges, local activists have argued the act expands the federal government’s power to investigate and prosecute suspected terrorists at the expense of civil liberties.

Doctors’ Words and IArt Exhibit at the Zoellner Arts Center through June 20
“The Bridge,” which traces a woman’s final weeks in a hospital, is named for a collection of Marc J. Straus poetry. The exhibit is an MRI of the soul. “It is an emotional and an intellectual challenge, a way of celebrating the preciousness of life, a reminder that a doctor isn’t God or the Devil,” says Ricardo Viera, who directs Lehigh’s galleries and museum operation. Through June 20.
