Global Villagers learn how to forge international relationships
Eighty-three adults from 41 countries converged on Lehigh University's campus Sunday for the start of this year's Global Village, a program designed to improve international business and personal relations. In six weeks, the students, ages 18 to 38, will improve their English, form international friendships, increase their business and teamwork acuity and learn how to work with people of other cultures. ''The goal is to teach international business and leadership development and create a network of young people that can work together,'' said Richard Brandt, a Lehigh University professor and director of the Bethlehem university's Iacocca Institute. The Global Village program started there in 1997 at the suggestion of Allentown native and former Chrysler Corp. chief executive Lee Iacocca.

Justices were prudent to set aside pledge for later
Perry A. Zirkel, professor of educational leadership at Lehigh, wrote an op-ed on the U.S. Supreme Court's decision to duck deciding the merits of the case involving the words ''under God'' in the Pledge of Allegiance, a decision Zirkel calls neither unusual nor imprudent. Indeed, in the wake of 9-11 and the unabated war on terrorism, with religious ferment and patriotic fervor at a high level, the Court, careful to preserve its trusted position under and for the U.S. Constitution, was wise to wait when it handed down its ruling on Flag Day for another time to decide where to place its allegiance, Zirkel writes.
