Patna-Born Young Scientist Receives Highest National Honor in US
Shalinee Kishore, assistant professor of electrical and computer engineering at Lehigh, was mentioned in an article about being among the 20 young scientists to receive the coveted Presidential Early Career Award for Scientist and Engineers (PECASE) for her research in wireless access to communication networks. Last Monday on June 13th, Shalinee was awarded the PECASE award, the highest award one can receive in the U.S. as a young scientist or engineer. President George Bush honored the 20 leaders for their wide-ranging research accomplishments and for their significant educational contributions. Monday's awards bring the number of NSF-supported PECASE recipients to 180 since the program was launched in 1996.

Special Ed Ruling Has Districts, Families on Edge
Perry Zirkel, professor in the college of education at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about a family who sued an Oregon school district for allegedly failing to properly address their son's learning problems. A U.S. district judge has ruled that the family will not have their boarding school costs reimbursed. In Oregon, cases of tuition reimbursement are rare — roughly on the order of one or two a year. But these kinds of challenges are on the rise nationally, said Zirkel. Educators and parents are now watching closely for the outcome of the parents' appeal to the 9th U.S. Court of Appeals — which could set the precedent for districts in several western states.

Court Verdict May Weaken Turkey’s EU Bid
Henri Barkey, professor of international relations at Lehigh, was quoted in an article about Turkey’s EU Bid. The European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) has ordered a retrial of Turkey’s public enemy No. 1, a move that may fuel anti-Western sentiment in the country and further weaken Turkey’s European Union (EU) aspirations. “Many Turks see the EU, which was supposed to provide the new anchor for Turkish reforms and further integration with the West, as a poisoned chalice precisely because it proscribes changes that will force the radical transformation of the Turkish political space,” Barkey said at a May 11 hearing on U.S.-Turkish relations held before the U.S. House International Relations Committee in Washington. “The debate in Europe, especially in France, on the new European Constitution that has made opposition to Turkish accession to the EU a central theme, has further damaged Turkish self-confidence and belief that they would get a fair hearing in Europe,” Barkey said.

Lehigh University was mentioned in an article about being part of a Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency grant. Santa Barbara-based Innovative Micro Technology said this week that it has partnered with MEMtronic for the second phase of a DARPA grant. The two companies will work together on a $3.69M project for developing robust, reliable RF MEMS Capacitive Switches. Other collaborators on the program are Lehigh University and Exponent. IMT is a developer of MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems) devices, used for drug discovery, biomedical implants, inertial navigation, printing, and more.
